Background is great!
Foreground, not so much.
I don't even want to begin to understand how that fire isn't tearing apart that boat. ;3

how long do you usually spend on the thumbnailing/pre-painting processes?

Not enough.

It varies, though. Sometimes (especially working digitally) I'll dive straight into "paint" without even a line drawing. Other times I'll do thumbnails, sketches, studies, gather reference, do a solid line drawing, and then final get to painting. Routine's are nice, but I haven't found one that will get me professional-quality work yet, so I still experiment.

how long for most of your acrylic works that feature characters in the context of an environment?

Lately I've just been winging it--start with a pencil drawing on the board, then dive into paint. That's gotten me into trouble, though, because the compositions for these have been rather... dull. So I need to fix that. I'm a horrible example to follow.

what are you doing for subject matter? as i'm slowly but surely dropping the playing of most of my video games, i'm finding that i don't have a lot of subject matter that i'm interested in painting (like, for non-'from-life' stuff)

Find stuff that really interests you. Read stories, watch movies, look around you. There's plenty out there.

If you're looking to push your creative muscles, I'd get into some of the weekly activities on CA. They're a great resource.
