you speak about the info palette, the most overlooked one. if it is, and it is in my case, how are we supposed to be able to find it? perhaps add where to find it...

Why not using a vector mask, just shape it out with the pen tool and then with the type tool click in it (the symbol of the type tool has then a circle around it...).
