Description
name: hel
species: passerina
likes: pain (of others), puzzles, tea, family
dislikes: sharp objects, footwear, light clothing
- Backstory
hel lived with her sister, edda, and their family in northumberland at the time that the vikings began their assault on the english coast. she has few memories of her childhood, not even remembering her given name--she does, vaguely, recall being taken from her home by invaders along with her sister when they were both relatively young.
hel was albinistic, lacking the darker complexion of her birth family--where this was a mere inconvenience in her english homeland, it was unbearable in her captors' lands. as a slave, she toiled endlessly in the sun, causing severe burns wherever her skin was exposed--this, and a lack of care for their slaves' general wellbeing, led to her growing her hair to an almost unseemly length to fend off the sun's rays.
in her late teens, she was chosen to be a sacrifice by the sect she worked beneath, and suffered hanging by the hands until death.
after the first day, her sister climbed to the hilltop where she was left to die, and thrust a dagger into her abdomen in the hope that it would end her sister's suffering. edda ran, appalled by her actions, and hel bled to death alone.
some weeks later, the sculpture where hel had hung was without a corpse.
soon after, edda was found dead on her cot, a dagger in her pelvis.
- Present
hel and edda wandered for centuries in the shadows; they saw the rise and fall of empires, paraded about as deities to commoners, and lived over the span of the eastern world. hel practiced the teachings that sent her to her death--the spikes embedded in her hands had never left her, always growing back like antlers when removed, and the pain was immeasurable. her only recourse, then, was to mete out sacrifices to whichever god and deity might offer her some respite in exchange for blood.
in the 16th century, she and her sister happen upon another passerina, unwittingly sentenced to dead in the cold of winter. hel becomes enamored with her--her kindness, the lilting tones of her voice, the way she resembled her sister in all her softness and warmth. hel follows her, and edda follows hel. together they are the beginnings of a makeshift family, and hel loves her family above all else.
- Relationships
edda: hel's biological sister. they have lived together hundreds of years--she is hel's foil. where hel wishes to burn down all in her path, edda mends the wreckage left in the wake of her sister's anger. they have become as two sides of a whole; if one were to fall, the other would inevitably follow.
ves: a passerina hel revels as both a surrogate parent and a goddess. hel indulges her in everything, considering herself both a disciple and guard to her--tazia merely sees in her a poor soul in need of guidance.
karasu: hel does not know what to make of this passerina. they are too modern, and hel does not understand most of their customs and vernacular--if she were to choose one thing that interests her most about this passerina, it would be the blind, clouded eye on their forehead.
