hmm, it's hard to think of any tips for water coloring out of the blue....is there anything specific you'd like to have tips for? And I'd say one good tip for coloring in general (with any medium) would be to use more than just the "base" color for shading. Not just only a darker hue...for example for this artwork I mixed the base color for her jacket with a bit red for the shadings. Argh, I hope you understand what I mean XD It's a bit hard to explain something like this, especially in english (not my mother tongue) X_X
Maybe I'll really make a tutorial when I draw my next bigger artwork (^▽^)

As for watercoloring; what kind of paper do you use or recommend? Also does it matter what brand of water colors you have? How do you keep the colors in control and not all over the place?

You should definitely use water color paper. There are many different kinds of water color papers, some have a rough surface and have a coarse-grained texture, but I don't really use this kind of paper. I would recommend paper with a rather fine surface 'cause you can get better and clearer outlines on fine paper. And the paper should be rather thick, at least about 300 gsm, otherwise the paper will crinkle if you use much water. At the moment I use the Mixed Media Bamboo paper from "Hahnemühle", that's pretty good
As for the brand of water colors...hmm, generally you can make good artworks with water colors from any brand. But the "better" brands work with more pigments so the colors shine more and are usually more lightfast. A brand I can recommend is Winsor & Newton, they are also not that expensive and have a pretty high quality :3
And keeping the colors in place...well, be cautious! XD Haha, I sometimes can't do that so well either, it takes a bit practice. But generally, the more water you take, the harder it is to control where the color goes. I often wet the places I want to color with a brush (not too wet!) first and then take the color with not too much water in the brush and put it on the wet place. That way the color should only "flow" in the wet place. And if that layer is dry you can add layers or add shadows or highlights. With this method you will get hard edges between the colors. Or you go wet on wet, that way you will get smooth transitions.
