Iris shares a lot in common with her father, Shanks. Although Iris is shown to be more serious at times and doesn't share her father's love of alcohol. She is fun-loving, quirky and goes along with most situations. Iris is good at looking after reckless people since she can also be calm and patient to help control their carelessness, as she has looked after both Ace and Luffy as their vice-captain.
She has a strong sense of justice, but not like the Marines. She simply cannot stand those who abuse their power. She is caring and will protect or stand up for the weak should they need it.
Like anyone else with dear friends, she cares very much for the people close to her and would do anything to protect them.

Despite having a fun-loving and easy-going attitude Iris has quite the temper, however, it is not seen often in her older years. Iris is also usually attracted to older men, she has had child crushes on Benn Beckman (who she said she would marry and had the closest relationship to next to Shanks), Hawkeye Mihawk and Gol D. Roger (she developed a crush on him through the stories Shanks told her.). Due to Iris's young age, she can also be a bit inexperienced and naive.

History

Iris was born in the West Blue In Shanks's hometown. Where she stayed with her mother Teuta, (at the time Shanks's lover). Iris was an unplanned surprise making Shanks nineteen when Iris was born. Shanks was not always around when Iris was growing up, but he would sometimes take her with him to the Grand Line. Being around Shanks, Iris came to know Hawkeye Mihawk very well, as she was around a few times when they fought. She calls Hawkeye 'Uncle Hawkeyes'; he doesn't seem to mind her calling him this. Iris is very loved by the whole Red Hair Pirates crew. Shanks often gets mad at his crew because they are always hogging Iris and he can never get any time with his daughter, with the crew laughingly stating that she is basically their daughter too.

When Iris was eight, her house caught on fire late at night due to a rug being too close to the fireplace. By the time Teuta found out the house was on fire, most of the house was engulfed in flames. Teuta quickly goes to get Iris in her room; on the way out part of the roof collapses on top of them. Both pinned, Teuta managed to make enough room for Iris to crawl out. Yelling at Iris to get out of the house, Iris was hesitant to leave as she wanted to help her mother who was still trapped but after being yelled at again Iris ran outside. Teuta passed away from Smoke inhalation before the house burned down.

When Shanks went to visit his family after leaving the East Blue and returning to the Grand Line. When arriving at his hometown he was told what happened, hurrying to where their house was he found Iris sitting next to a large burnt spot on the ground where the house was. Iris started crying when she saw him and told her him what happened, Shanks reassured her and took her with him.
After some months in the Grand Line and enjoying her time with the crew and her dad, one day while playing hide-and-seek with Shanks. A large storm suddenly appeared, in moments the strong winds and waves sweep Iris off the ship. She managed not to drown and was picked up slavers, she was brought to Sabaody Archipelago and sold at the human auction house. Iris was bought by a lower noble and was assigned as a maid, however, she was disobedient and had tried to escape many times from her so-called 'masters' as a result, she got lashings. Although Iris only got lashings a few times, some were deep enough to leave scars. For four years, Iris remained their servant but after learning one day that her masters were heading to the South Blue, Iris decided to play nice and wait until they crossed over the Red Line to escape. After plenty of time preparing for her escape, it was quite easy for her too, she also helped and escaped with a fellow slave named, Hovik. Once they escaped, he helps her go to the East Blue where he is also from.

Once they get to the East Blue they head to Hovik's hometown where he said she could stay with him. Once they arrived at his hometown there were many tears and hugs for Hovik, once he mentioned Iris was his savior they threw a party and a feast for both of them. Iris happily stayed and lived with Hovik for the next couple of years.

When Iris was fifteen she had become much stronger and helped protect the town from pirates and bandits that would cause trouble. One day after a pretty rough storm the Spade Pirates crew docked their ship in town.
Iris didn't allow pirates on the island cause all they do is make a mess, however, they seemed tired and low on supplies. Iris clearly stated they are not allowed here and to leave but Ace who came off the ship stood and pleaded that they need supplies and some of his crew members are sick. Iris warned them again but Ace drops to his hands and knees and pleads once again. Iris was shocked, he reminded her of Shanks.
Iris softened up and allowed them to go into town and get medical help and supplies but under her supervision.
For the few days they stayed Iris grew close to them, joking and laughing at Ace when he falls asleep while eating. Once they recuperated and were ready to continue their adventure, Ace went to find Iris.
After talking for a while Ace decided to ask Iris if she wanted to join his crew since she was stronger than she looked. Iris was more than happy to, nearly jumping into Ace from her excitement.
After saying goodbye to everyone in town and having a send-off party, Iris leaves with her new crew and captain to the Grand Line.

Not long after, the crew voted to make Iris the Vice-captain because of how much she looks after the crew and Ace. She was so happy and honored that she got a tattoo to remember.
Iris looked after Ace the most, always remaining behind with him when he refused to run.
Ace didn't notice Iris's crush on him for a while. But the crew did and often teased and messed with her about it, putting her in situations where she was alone with him or pushing her towards him.

When Ace told his crew he wanted to meet "Red-Haired" Shanks, Iris was surprised. A little after, everyone on the ship was shocked when Iris told them Shanks was her dad.
She simply laughs and tells them not to worry.
Once the Spade Pirates find where he is they head through the icy storm, Iris who was farther behind making sure the ship was good and no one gets lost. After Shanks and Ace's introductions, Iris comes into the cave, and yells for Shanks, running to and hugging him. A bawling reunion on Shanks's side and almost all of the Red-Haired Pirates got teary-eyed as well, glomping Iris after she hugs Shanks.
Ben comes and steals her from the hug pile after she hugs Ben he tells her how she's become a fine woman. After partying and talking the next morning Ace and his crew were ready to leave.
Speaking with her dad before they depart, she playfully mentions that Ace is her boyfriend. Shanks freaked out a little bit and after they talk about it a little more, Shanks tells her how much she's grown and to be careful.
Iris gives a few more hugs and leaves.

One day Iris realizes Ace was being a bit distant and deep in thought, when she asks him what was wrong he hesitantly told her to meet him on the deck at midnight.
