Bones and Shiny are both disembodied souls - neither can survive for long without a vessel to contain them - Bones has his makeshift body and Shiny has her lantern.

Some info about their personalities.

Bones: Is very content with his life despite having no real body or his memories. He does not really care about getting his original body back and if it wasn't for Shiny he would just wander around doing whatever he wants (i.e. collecting bones). He has a short attention span and is easily distracted by pretty bones or sparkly objects. He often gets both himself and Shiny into dangerous situations due to his lack of common sense.

Shiny: Is much less content with life and seems to have retained more of her memories than Bones has - she is certain that it is possible for them to both get their original bodies back; she is also pretty sure that she was a royal of some sort in her previous life. Unlike Bones, she is desperate to get back to her original body and tries to encourage him to search for it, as well as clues that will bring back their memories. She orders Bones about and hates the nickname he has given her. She has a lot more brains than Bones does despite having no body - often saving his ass from the dumb shit he does.
