Description
Just wanted to draw something fairly simple. Decided to draw Simba and Nala in my style, but Nala wasn't looking too good (definitely need to tweak my style to suit females, she just looked old) but I quite like Simba here. The way I draw eyes, noses and larger chins aren't features of Ahadi and Mohatu as some people, I've noticed, think - they're just a style I'm adopting. So this is what Simba looks like with those features.
This is fairly quick, I used a reffed practise-sketch of Simba I drew ages back when I was initially changing features, and just adapted it.
Blend of Pridelander/Outlander noses with a little kink. One or no small wrinkles at base of nose for young/friendly looking lions, two for tougher/older lions.
The curl at the corner of the mouth - generally makes em look a bit tougher. May be quite small (especially on females) but always present, specially the black corner of the lip.
Ear rims - I plan to darken all ear rims, probably including females. Also the ears are bigger, and less rounded (with raggedy looking edges).
Squiggly lines on mane - will be adopted for all males, based loosely off a typical Disney comic style. Just adds a nice bit of movement to the main, less flow in one direction, makes the image 'busier' imo, which I feel is important for characters with sharp, flat shading often on simple backgrounds.
Larger chins - will be adopted in all lions, with face 'height' being affected by level of eyes in relation to nose (see Ahadi for comparison).
Eyes: 'Eyelashes' reversed, all lions (except, perhaps, females) will have the 'bags' under the eye and partially closed eyes. I like the rougher look it gives them.

I'm afraid I really don't have time to enter any competitions at the moment because of work, I'm barely getting to do the art I want to do, and I'm behind on commissions! Sorry!

Glad you like it! I've been looking at it so long now that the original Disney version looks chubby and plain to me

I would have if I'd not deleted her! Her eyes made her look rough and old, I need to soften up my style for females and find a different way of making them match the males!

Can I ask which texture you used for this? I use paper textures but they never look comic/storybook-y!

I just add noise, around 11% gaussian on the colour layer and nothing else. But I use Paintshop Pro, not Photoshop, so I don't know how different it'll look in any other program. Hope this helps though!

Haha yeah it's a lot easier than adding textures. I always add some to every picture I do, even if it's only a small bit - pictures, especially done in this style, can look TOO clean imo, because if you think about what comic book scans look like they're always a little bit grainy no matter how good the quality is.

This is very nice 8D How do you get Simba's fur like that? If you look closely it looks like a lovely texture.

Noise! I added around 11% Gaussian noise to just the colour layer and nothing else. I use Paintshop pro tho, not Photoshop sho I wouldn't know the settings to replicate it exactly in any other program. Hope this helps! :3
