I kinda wish this "Grumpy Colt" would have been female since Tard is a girl, but that still didn't stop me from flipping out happily the moment I noticed this.

Fun? Don't talk to be about fun. I've seen it. It's rubbish.
I smiled once. It was awful.
My capacity for happiness could fit into a matchbox without taking out the matches first.
I'd give you advice about fun, but you wouldn't listen. No one ever does.

Lets see.  Bronies are meme spouting, fedora wearing, socially inept people.  This character perfectly captures all that.

MentalFloss In reply to rickychip [2014-01-06 05:59:29 +0000 UTC]

I like how people like you see fit to generalize entire groups in the narrowest way possible.  I suppose anything for that little shot in the arm of feeling "superior", huh?

For the record, his attire matches that of the Manhattan of yesteryear.  I have seen images of Vincent Price wearing a coat exactly like this.  If you are going to take issue with the style of a horror icon, then you and I are going to have trouble.

Also, the hat isn't even a fedora.  It's either a trilby, or a highly-stylized stetson.

Lastly, the pony was created expressly for the purpose of displaying "grumpiness".  They animators chose what has become a widely-recognized symbol of "grumpiness" that both children and adults can recognize.

But, by all means.  Keep making asinine assumptions in order to feel better about yourself.  It's probably the only thing you have to fall back on.

Aaaand now I wait for you to blindly assume I'm a male, because it's probably your only means of comforting yourself to do so.

rickychip In reply to MentalFloss [2014-01-06 08:55:30 +0000 UTC]

I have nothing but the utmost respect for Mr Price since Im a fan of classic horror and I dont blindly assume anything without doing research ie combing through profiles to fully understand the person and get acquainted with their art style.  Nice gallery by the way, and I'm being sincere.

However, this character can be interrupted in many ways I agree so I am no way demonizing your reasoning to support your idea.  The reality though, is that it does match the stereotypical attributes of a stereotypical brony.  The Grumpy Cat mark represents the torrents of memes that are always posted by them.  The trepidacious demeanor implies the inability to act in public and the hat does resemble a fedora the way its designed.  Piecing that all together, you have the common description of who people describe bronies.  Its profiling yes, but thats the reality of it.  Or at least how the internet views them.  As for the fedora, the show uses a simplistic art style so who knows what type of hat is really is, but to me it looks like a fedora.  You seem to have an encyclopedic knowledge on fashion so your assessment is probably more accurate than mine.

Sure, my comment was a bit overbearing but I was being observant of what this pony was trying to convey.  Perhaps a a subtle nod to the fandom?  Maybe something more cautionary and satiric?  Or maybe this pony was placed in a retro-40s outfit to correlate with the setting.  Its subjective, and the way it was showcased kinda gave me a negative vibe.  Im no means a brony or participate in the fandom.  Its just one of the many shows I enjoy to watch since I have an affinity for animation and comics.  I usually comment on certain aspects of the show that draw my attention.  First one being a Big Lebowski reference.  Anyway, if I came off a bit crass, I apologize.

MentalFloss In reply to rickychip [2014-01-07 08:46:17 +0000 UTC]

You mean the torrents of memes that are posted by pretty much EVERYONE between the ages of 10 and 30?  Or pretty much EVERY other fan base?  I'm in the Gravity Falls fan base - if you think memes only happen in a single fan base, you're sadly mistaken.

The hat does not resemble a fedora whatsoever.  It is unmistakably a Tyrolean.  Even if it WERE a fedora, it would be appropriate attire for an unmistakably metropolitan setting.

What you see as "trepidacious behavior" is simply "grumpiness" - the sole trait he is intended to exhibit.  Tardar Sauce has become synonymous with this trait in a highly recognizable way.  That does not imply that there is a correlation between his attire, and having her face for cutie mark.

There is extremely little valid evidence to even support this description as a stereotype, especially considering that I highly doubt it is at all limited to members of a single fan base, if it is even as prevalent as people like to gleefully claim.  However, I'm sure we're all aware that negative stereotypes are founded on wild exaggerations.  If we're going to be fully accepting of such nonsense, we might as well revert to jokes about "buck-toothed Asians" and "lazy Mexicans".

It is one thing to poke fun at things that are grounded in reality.  It is another thing entirely to fabricate a mask to place over the face of a group in order to dehumanize them for your personal amusement.  I am quite tired of seeing such childish behavior being not only tolerated, but encouraged.

Its perplexing how things like Spaghetti and Fedoras became the new slang for the 2010s.

MentalFloss In reply to rickychip [2014-01-19 03:48:50 +0000 UTC]

Actually, that IS pretty weird, when you think about it.  Thousands of years from now, if there are any sentient beings left on this planet, they will dig out remnants of our popular culture, and wonder why in the hell we all apparently carried spaghetti in our pockets...

You are the most reasonable person I've seen in that position concerning this one pony, though I don't fully agree with your opinion. But yeah, as you said, people can interpret this character in different ways.

I think this pony was just a nod, something that just was supposed to only be paid attention a few seconds. I bet this guy will be forgotten after one or two episodes.

Fun Fact: I compared the attention given to this character on different brony sites/communities (EqD, Derpibooru, /mlp/...) and Tumblr is the one that made the biggest deal out of them (while the others gave little attention). I think this speaks a lot about the brony community on Tumblr :/

For the last 2 years, fedoras have been negatively associated with autistics, introverts, and socially awkward people.

What is so bad being autistic/introvert?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rickychip In reply to FrancisSplinter [2014-01-07 02:48:32 +0000 UTC]

Youre kidding right?  They're mental disorders that prohibit people from being social.  Though some autistics tend to enjoy social gatherings and human interaction, they have issues controlling their behavior.  Being an introvert is actually worse cause its when a person chooses to isolate themselves from society cause they prefer being alone.  They'll usually make lame excuses not to hang out with friends or to even go outside.

FrancisSplinter In reply to rickychip [2014-01-07 09:39:54 +0000 UTC]

Excuse me. I've got a diarrhea from all the ignorant junk coming from your keyboard/mouth. I am an introvert myself and I am not isolated from society at all and I don't wish so. I am a businessman so naturaly I meet dozens persons per day and I don't have a problem makes a conversation with them. This all just contradict with all that ignorant feculence you have just said.

rickychip In reply to FrancisSplinter [2014-01-08 00:59:08 +0000 UTC]

You say that you converse with people being someone of business, but claim to be an introvert?  Speaking of contradictions.  No sorry, it doesn't work that way.  That sounds like a extrovert since you're physically dealing with people everyday it seems.  Either you're one or the other.  There's no middle ground cause each term has its set definition of being social or not.  Unless you say relatively introverted, thats more reasonable cause maybe perhaps you're actively networking with people via your job, but afterwards you just wanna relax at home with no distractions.  But if you state you're introverted, youre claiming to be 100% anti-social which you're not.  And hey, thats a positive thing so take the compliment.

Pencilmech In reply to rickychip [2014-01-31 01:39:55 +0000 UTC]

How would you spend your free time? Would you prefer to have an evening to yourself or go hang with a bunch of friends? That's how I always thought of introverted-ness or extroverted-ness. Just a simple preference. I can, for example, dislike broccoli, but my job requires me to wash broccoli and cook broccoli and serve broccoli and promote broccoli... That doesn't mean I suddenly like broccoli. It's just a job.
