But technically speaking there are no panthers, what people commonly call a panther is usually either a black leopard, black cougar or a black jaguar (If you look really closely, you can see spots in the fur).
Panther is more of a secondary name for several large cats, mostly because animals such as Lions, Tigers, Jaguars and Cougars all come under the genus Panthera Meaning that there is no single species of creature reffered to solely as a panther, let alone a black panther
In fact it's commonplace to refer to an actual black panther as a "Cryptid" which is a creature which has been suggested to exist, but has no evidence of existing. Really, the BBC would have covered this point.
