Description
These above are the first experiments I made with GIMP and its filters the first day I installed it, about a week ago. ( the filters I used here are those of the G'mic plugin: gmic.eu/gimp.shtml ).GIMP was a big surprise for me, I have to thank for suggesting me to try it, I'm already in love with this program!
I apologize for the low quality of these pictures.. they are rough experiments. I think with a little more overpainting, patience and experience it should be possible to get decent results..

I love how you integrate the realism of the photos with the simple elegance of the comic characters....and the light falloff is always just perfect that way too! Cool stuff and thanks for sharing which programs you're using!

It doesn't seem to be an easy task to mix 3D modeling, photo resources and digital drawings and get the result that looks whole, nice and natural, but I think you manage to make the best out of your resources (also give the right atmosphere by lighting)! The scenery doesn't look alien or separated from characters, and in a whole mixed media is perceived as some special part of your style. The second pic resembles an anime shot a lot, in my opinion plants and flowers came out particularly marvellous, just like they where carefully drawn too! Why did you reject them? By the way, I didn't know Kay had a soft spot for drawing!

Gotta say, these digital renditions are amazing I've never thought one could render 3d images in such a 2d style with GIMP; I have to remember to try it.
Really, though, it's good to see some effective test pages from ya, friend. And I love how they all manage to give their own little addition to the story. Especially with the second to last panels. Puppy fighting dogs are always touching :3

If you purly used GIMP for this, I'm love to have this in my main group in the folder for that program .
Also for experiments, these are pretty good .

I still think it looks good and I still think 3D is the best option for sanity's sake. I really like how you added even more flowers, they add so much colour and liveliness.
If you want to check out more drawing and image manipulation programs, I can recommend some.
I personally use mypaint when I'm using my tablet. Very simple and light program, more like a canvas. Definitely not an image manipulation program, though. It's free.
As for image manipulation you should seriously check out Krita. Its free and loaded with tons of features. You can use it with a tablet but I found it a bit too laggy to draw in.
Inkscape is a vector drawing program. This is excellent for mouse users, 90% of the art (even my avatar) in my gallery was done by mouse in this program. Its very different from the usual way people draw on computers. In this program you start with a basic shape and refine it until it looks good. Since I have unsteady hands and work well with shapes this was excellent for me. You probably won't use it much but it can be good for refining lines and producing images that can be scaled to any size.
The last program I know next to nothing about. Blender. Its a free and mainly used for 3D creation.
I tried to link to their sites but deviant art considered all the links spam . They were the top result when I googled them though.

A me sembrano proprio professionali!!

Finding the right photo.. well it depends..
For these experiments I simply grab the first things I found... I only wanted to test the filters.. And I added the characters later, just for not leaving the pictures empty..
For the actual comic - yes as you say it will be more tricky to find the right one.. but with some cut and paste.. I think it will work!
Well.. it HAS to work!! These photo-manipulated background took me from 30 minutes up to an hour... If I had drawn them from scratch in that time I wouldn't have finished not even the lineart!!

Indeed, that's why 3d envoriment sounds so great. Too bad you have to be really good with it to not just use the already created ones. I mean with simple objects that is fine, but to create new things it needs some hard work, skill and knowledge.
Tedious thing that we cannot make backgrounds with our brains. Oh well this is probably the excuse of me why I only drew a scene from the story from time to time.
Not to mention that the small story I wrote was viewed 931 times added together and by at least 150-160 people. If only 30 of them actually read it, well then it was more sucessful than any kind of visual story telling I did so far.
Maybe I should mix writing with drawing or something, because thanks to my work and my own talentless lazyness through comic it will be a life long project

You brought up a very interesting subject here my friend.. I too faced the same dilemma when I was starting with the story... A comic? A book? An illustrated book? Something new?
I tried every option.. And even though my story is long (not as much as yours ) and a comic means a commitment of several years.. in the end it was the option that worked best for me..
And, believe me, when I started I drew like a 5 years old child...(and I was almost 30.. ) It was a lot of frustration, failures, and working my ass off in every spare second I had.. Honestly I think you're smarter than me, therefore I think you'll learn faster and better than me..
I think you should try every combination of words+images (or words alone) that comes to your mind... and then go for the one you find more suitable for you, the one YOU like the most... (not the one that scores the better results) All in all we are here to have fun doing the things we love, isn't it?
I haven't actually read your short story ( please forgive me, it is merely a matter that I don't have much time and reading in english is still a struggle for me.. )
but told me you're very talented and your style is brilliant.
If it worked so well here on dA, have you considered to submit it to websites specialized in written fiction? I think wattpad is one of the biggest...

Yeah, I'm still in that dilemma. The comic sounds the most appealing, because that translates my thoughts the best to the aduience. In a book it's up to everyone's imagination how things happen or not, how the described people look like ect. However that takes a lot of time and not just the invested time in it, but the story telling's pace. One page of text is around 5 full drew page and you can't really cut things out like probably character developing idle chatter, because that would go on the story's expense.
And thank you I guess with the given time and commitment it would reach an acceptable point someday, it's just the ammount of free time and my personal judgement that bothers. The latter is rarely satisfied.
And yes, you are right. I only mentioned the views, because at first I assumed that only 2-3 people from my watchers will going to read it, lacking the visuality that catches the eye or the reown to anyone even know about it and I stand corrected and also puzzled how the hell people even found it. Point is writing a page long of text, while can be tedious it consumes as much time i draw a character's part in lineart
That dilemma.
Fame or recognition is secondary if not non-existent. I started it for my own amusement and I still do for it and perhaps for the 4-5 people who actually communicate with me I still be the guy who picks up the phones at his workplace 12h/shift even if a million people would watch my stuff a day.
And no problem at all. I too have a hard time reading other's novel experiments which is usually 1-2 page long.

Yes I see what you mean... every author has its own precise idea of how their OC's look like.. and it is hard to hand it over to the imagination of the readers..
I'm glad to know that you're not seeking for success.. Surely you show much more self confidence than me.. I remember when I posted my first drawings.. nobody was looking at them, and I was desperate, because I believed that few views mean that the art was ugly... But, instead of trying to improve the art... I wasted a lot of time trying to get more views ..
PS. How come that you know english so well? Have you been abroad maybe?
And before starting with your comic.. what did you do in your free time if I may ask? Just reading war books?

Tyranio In reply to non-nobis-domine [2015-02-21 22:43:52 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, no description is accurate enough to replace a simple image.
Well I do seek success, just not fame or a living. If a picture is remotely close of what I had in mine, it's a success for me. But at first, aside your encouragement I had no other feedback or people who had interest in it, but that changed in course of the months. (of course I KNEW from the start that my art was ugly, so my expectations weren't too high to begin with). Of course I would be lying, if I would say that I don't enjoy if others find any enjoyment in my art, but that's hardly my motive.
As for english, thank you, but it's just self-education. In school I learned german, but perhaps I can't even ask for a glass of water. I had no interest in german and no way to practice it. (this was in the dark age of the Internet). However a few years ago, i began to leard english word by word to cruedly translate the ton of english text around me. Then I found an online strategy game "Supremacy 1914" which I don't play anymore, but while I did, I chatted with a lot of english speaking people, that helped a lot with making sentences instead of just understanding them. Also there I role played a little in political RPs which was my first take on writing and creating characters on my own. Tyranio was born back then, allthough just the name. Still I have much to learn, even now.
But no I was never abroad. I never even left Hungary in my life.
As for my free time, well nowadays just either listening to music while drawing, reading or playing a few hours with some strategy/FPS war games. (some of the randomly created tense situations actually serves as inspiration for smaller battle scenes, like in that short novel.) Just wasting time in an enjoyable way, nothing really productive.
