This is one of the no rivet rivet pieces I made in i think my junior year at MCA. Regardless, I would periodically collect my own drops (or scrap material) and scrap materials left in the floor by other students, after class was over, as it was customary for someone to clean up (if you were in a responsible class) afterward. This wouldn't always happen, as many metals students were just taking the class because they couldn't resist how awesome the program was, and how amazing it is to make art from metal. Many of these students were not emphasizing metal work, nor even sculpture, so many of them weren't horribly invested in taking care of the classroom.

As such I reaped the rewards, which were free materials to work with in a particular side project i had going, and a clean place in which to work, when I or a few others cleaned up.

anyway, this is a NO solder piece. This also has very little fusion elements, Its almost entirely physical bonds, such as wrapping, pinching, and rivetless riveting. a process that may have existed before I invented it for my own purposes. But was in my mind, my own creation.

The piece is made of all non ferrous metals. Mostly copper and bronze, a bit of brass, and a bit of nickel silver.

The coloring is a combination of fire scale and fire coloring. Fire coloring is a common process among metal smiths, and one many discover on their own, much like I did. copper, and materials with copper content, can develop a rainbow like color scheme when exposed to the right amount of heat, and allowed to cool, much like steel does when its being tempered. If left alone to fully cool, it will retain this color for years. As you can see on this freshly photographed piece, which is at least 3 years old, if not more.

Great work - I love the texture and colour of the work. And great that it was done in your own time - most of my fellow classmates aren't that dedicated. I'm rather jealous of your metal work course, haha!

And great description btw, it was really interesting to read the story behind it.

thanks. i try to talk about my work when theres something to talk about. My fractals don;t usually have much description, because a lot of fractalists can distinguish the parameters used anyway, and the other people don't know what your talking about.

I did a lot of works in my spare time while I was in school. Even though I didn't have much spare time.

thanks. I like both ways of doing it, just gentle and giving it rainbow colors, and harsh to really burn up the metal which gives its the reds purples and blacks.

my personal favorite is to paint flux over the piece and then torch it almost to the point of melting and then chuck it in the water. it gives these crazy specks all over of clean copper that looks GORGEOUS against the patina

yeah, I've done a lot with flux as well. you can get some nice effects with metal dust in the flux also

Very resourceful and diligent of you. Well crafted and I love the colors you've gotten from all the firescale.
