Description

Sigh. Another Skyrim-themed limited-colour-scheme-save-for-the-characters’-eyes drawing with a story behind it. I’m so predictable, ain’t I?

Aedmar, my snooty (but secretly nice) Altmer Dragonborn and the Arch-Mage of Winterhold, feels very insecure about his marriage. He loves his Brelyna more than anything, but he is afraid that, as it was in the case with his first wife, he does not show it enough (being more used to sneering at people than being mushy with them). He also has this lurking fear that, once the young Dunmer’s girlish infatuation with him passes (the fact that he is often away from home, Dragonborning, will likely speed this along), she will start feeling uncomfortable around him because of their difference in race, age, and temperament.

And there is someone who gladly takes advantage of the new Arch-Mage’s persistent anxiety. Namely, one Malur Seloth, the lazy and cheeky steward of the Jarl of Winterhold, who used to pretend to be a College mage in order to manipulate the superstitious locals. Instead of helping him with his charade, Aedmar exposed him, making him fall from grace. Quite naturally, Malur swore revenge – and now he has a chance to exact it.

Taking advantage of one of the Arch-Mage’s frequent absences, Malur uses a sleeping potion to render Brelyna powerless during their meeting at the Frozen Hearth and fabricates evidence of her infidelity, which he presents to Aedmar soon after his return (okay… this totally has nothing to do with me taking a course in Shakespeare studies). The Altmer finds Malur’s venomous whispers all too easy to believe, and confronts Brelyna, who (unlike a certain hapless Moor’s wife) flies into a fiery Dunmeri rage after hearing that he has so blindly trusted Malur without hearing her side of the story. Taken aback, Aedmar begs her to tell him what really happened, but she refuses, as she does not really remember what happened when Malur lured her out to the local inn. Furious with Aedmar for doubting her feelings (and, though she does not admit it, ashamed of herself), she announces that she is breaking up with Aedmar, and storms off into the blizzard outside.

Aedmar searches for her, but in vain. Managing to elude him, Brelyna reaches Windhelm and boards a ship to Solstheim, to return to her House. Soon after being reunited with the Telvanni, she starts experiencing odd symptoms; Aphia, the Raven Rock healer, confirms her suspicion that she is with child.

This news is not a joyful as it might have been, as Brelyna is unsure whether the baby is Aedmar’s or Malur’s. Sensing her torment, Aphia offers her to terminate the pregnancy, but Brelyna refuses, saying that the child deserves to live and that she will love it regardless of who fathered it. In due time, the large and dysfunctional Telvanni family sees the arrival of a new member, a baby boy (who master Neloth would love to experiment on – but Brelyna won’t let him). The little one is born with unusually coloured eyes – much lighter than a Dunmer’s, almost lilac in colour; and his wispy hair is blonde, as Aedmar’s must have been before it went grey. This is proof that the baby is a half-blood, and that, consequently, the son of Brelyna’s husband.

At this point, she might have returned to Aedmar and tried to reconcile with him – but she feels it is too early to make such a dangerous journey, and the baby has to grow older first. And then, the odd Miraak business starts, Master Neloth demands help with his experiments, and Brelyna is left with too many things on her plate to think about getting back to mainland.

In the meanwhile, Aedmar, who has been dealing with his wife’s disappearance by losing himself in the affairs of the College and more Dragonborning, is attacked by odd cultists and travels to Solstheim to investigate. Soon enough, there comes a point when he is directed to Tel Mythryn. Upon approaching it, he sees a little toddler playing with a leather ball. A sudden gust of ashen wind makes the ball get stuck in a fork between a mature mushroom tree and its sapling, and the little boy begins to cry. The Altmer tries to ignore him – but something (a very strange feeling, which he first mistakes for annoyance) tells him that he must do something to make the child go quiet. He uses his magic to return the ball to the boy – and when he takes a closer look at him, the colour of the toddler’s eyes and hair leaves him utterly stunned. His heart hammering with an odd premonition, Aedmar asks the little one what his name is. The toddler replies that his name is Savos – and everything falls into place. A little Dunmer with pale eyes and hair, playing on Telvanni land, and named after Aedmar’s old friend and the former Arch-Mage – all of this can only mean one thing. Aedmar has a son.

(I must tell my mom to stop telling me the plot of the telenovelas she’s watching…)

O M GOODNESS- i can't get over the adorableness!!!!!!!!!
Can I, can I squish it's little cheeks!? Can I cuddle it?! (The baby, that is. Though I wouldn't mind doing so to that handsome daddy...)
Oh golly...those pudgy little fingers, his round face just beaming in sweetness! I looove the little scarf and the draped Telvanni cloak! <3
Not to mention- the soft highlights are simply gorgeous in this piece!!
Aedmar's expression- so confused, not knowing what to think. Torn between annoyance- like you said- and something quite different. The rusty purple tint of this piece, as well as the hint of a Mushroom trunk, totally give it that kind of warm, ashy feel that southern Solstheim has! Besides just being a beautiful colour!
...Ohhhh Malur.... You're in for some serious trouble... (and I think I know what it is now... *ahem Boethiah...*)
The story is so well knit! The way it weaves perfectly in and out of the game story lines, playing the characters like a master at Chess, and just when the knot gets snagged beyond tangled, it forms into an even, lovely braid: Savos. And what a cutey he is!! :3

As I mentioned before- one of my fav aspects to this pieces is the perfect wielding of the highlights! The glow of the magic around the ball might be completely lost, no matter how obvious it really is, if it weren't for those soft pinkish glares on the folds of Aedmar's robes, baby's eyes and curls and such. Those details are an easy thing to forget- or at least they are for me! Beautiful work!! And I still need to (gently) pinch those little cheeks.! xD

Gosh, thank you so much! I did try to make lil Savos as adorable as possible! Though Aedmar's reaction to people cuddling his precious scion might be just a weeee bit on the bristly side.

Daww, thank you! Momma Brely has to dress up her baby properly for the ashen weather. And Daddy will probably add a few more protective layers, and a Stoneflesh spell.

And I am so, so glad I pulled off Aedmar's expression - and dat colour scheme!

Oh my, I am really honoured by your appreciation of that Sload Opera! And I had lots of fun with the highlights in the drawing!

Thank you so much for making my day with your lovely comment! I hope my reply did it justice.

Awwww, of course he would be! Well, I guess I'l settle for huggling the big mer. >
Heh!! I can just imagine it.... Poor child, when he gets a little older, I can only imagine the giggles..."Hey look, it's Rocky!"

I really am still enthralled by your colour scheme, as I know I said in the first comment. You're quite a boss at choosing how much colour, how little, where and when...and your use of minimalist tones+ coloured eyes= brilliant. I'm addicted.

Pfff, now I am picturing all sorts of overprotective elven daddy shenanigans! Like Aedmar packing Savos' school bag with Fast Healing and Guardian Circle scrolls, but forgetting his lunch.
Oh boy, I was so thrilled to read your incredible response! I will make certain to feed the addiction summore.

Thank you for appreciating the cuteness! (I tried my best!)
And in the spirit of my roleplay, I actually made the fellow a non-essential follower with the console, and sacrificed him to Boethiah. Now Aedmar has some sexy poisonous armour!

um, if Breylna didn't cheat, why would she be worried it's the jerk's baby....and if he did the unthinkable~ WHY IS HE STILL BREATHING?

Yeah, I realized myself that I was being too vague here - but I have edited the description now.
And don't worry - Aedmar got his Ebony Mail, and Seloth was never seen again.
Thank you so very, very much!
