Description
I always thought spaceships with huge rotating sections were awesome. Since they're semi-plausible also, it means ships of this kind are sorta closer to reality than most of the static starships in most science fiction.I originally just wanted to polish up the exile Taiidan Heavy Cruiser, but then I decided to draw the Omega and the Leonov to show where the inspiration came from.
I also drew them to ward off comments of "Hey, a Taiidan-Omega Hybrid!" See for yourself, the only things they have in common are the rotating section and not much else.
Earth Alliance Omega Destroyer = Babylon 5
Alexei Leonov = 2010 (movie version)
Exile Taiidan Heavy Cruiser = Homeworld (alternate)

a more "hard sci-fi" take on homeworld? i approve
reminds me of my old "no artifical gravity" concepts for homeworld i drew a while ago.
the mothership looked more like a curved back version of itself with a large ring held at the rear, engines were abone and below the ring at the top tips.
sound interesting?

She's adorable!

Interestingly enough, the designer of the Omega class admitted that he lifted the shape of the rotating section from the Leonov (which I also see in there). Β
So, your Taiidan hybrid uses some pieces with pretty heady pedigree. Β

This is awesome. I would absolutely love to see this in Homeworld Remastered
..Actually, would you mind if I tried to actually implement it into Homeworld once I have enough time to get into Homeworld modding?

You mean that Taiidan heavy cruiser? Sure I guess, just mention that I designed it and show me the final image if it gets completed.

Lets see the Omega is about 1600 meters long I would say from scale that the Heavy Crusiser is about half that

Nope, canon is now solid on the size of Homeworld ships, as a Taiidani carrierΒ is on the order of some 8km in length thanks to Deserts of Kharak (theΒ Kapisi -the land carrierΒ you use in the game- is ~570 meters long and the Taiidani Carrier is multiplesΒ of it's length!) and the Mothership is canonically a bit taller than ~26km, just to put things into perspective.
Homeworld ships are hugeΒ as a general rule and they have very bigΒ guns if they're armed.

the Discovery you show also rotated, but the mechanism was inside the ship

This I knew already, but the point of the illustration was to compare ships with obvious rotating sections.

Something not many people tend to realize with designs like these is that in space if you only have one rotating-section, then the rotating-section and the cabin that is not meant to rotate will both rotate.
If you want a design that has sections with gravity and sections without, you need to have two rotating-sections (rotating in opposing directions) and the regular flight-cabin/engines-module.
Nice work on the designs from 2010 and the others that I don't recognize.

Well, canonically in B5, Earth Alliance had inertia dampener tech on all their ships -including lowly shuttles!- between the show itself and the aftermath of the Dilgar War. ID tech is an offshot of Earth research into artificial gravity systems and humanity exploited it to the fullest extent they could.

I always presumed there would be counter-rotating weights within the axis of whatever rotating section there was.

GundamMeister In reply to Norsehound [2011-03-14 23:19:11 +0000 UTC]
That would work, but it seems like it would be more trouble than it is worth with designs like these. It would be easier if the rotating section was perfectly circular (but that removes the industrial aesthetic you've established here).
These designs are still really nice. Damned science.

I loves it!
Homeworld and B5 are both amazing. And this is just a seamless blend of it, that fits beautifully into the HW universe. I must admit, though, i did think of the omega-class when i saw the centrifuge, but i knew that most of its the Taiidanii bruiser.
Sorry i didn't post anything when i Faved it.
I must ask, though, if the centrifuge would provide gravity for the entire vessel, though, or only that section. Because, if it only gives that one section grav, then i don't see much of a point of it.
Then again, I should probably just go watch B5 again. It might answer these questions

Wow, a tie to both Homeworld 1 and Babylon 5 in the same image. I salute you.
The detail is fantastic, especially given it's hand-drawn style (well, maybe you actually hand-drew it. It's still a style ^_^)
I think it's great to incorporate the rotators into the ship design to make it look streamlined. Because, after all, the centrifuge sectors will probably be our source of gravity for a long time on starships.

Amazing work with this. I always loved that part of the Babylon 5 spaceships.
You could also consider the Bebop, since it had a smallish rotating platform which supposedly held together it's artificial gravity pull.

Takes after my own heart. Been working on something similar myself, though it's all still up in the air for now. I like realistic starships more now that I know about them. Realistic battles next--how would you draw beyond visual range engagements?

Somewhere out there is a site called "Starship Dimensions" or somesuch- and has many spaceships compared together by their dimensions.
According to that site, the Discovery should be able to fit inside the docking bay of an Omega Destroyer no problem.
I assume the guy did his homework so I don't take serious objection to it... but that means the Leonov is tiny compared to the behemoth of the Omega.
Now, imagine how big Babylon 5 is compared to these ships

Norsehound In reply to Norsehound [2008-01-01 13:53:56 +0000 UTC]
Yes it would, and heavier when further from the centrifuge.
That's why supplies and storage would be stowed 'down there', unless you wanted some kind of workout. Hospitals and such might be moved closer to the center since the absence of gravity might do something for operations *shrug*
I haven't seen 2010 in a while either. I loved the Leonov though, despite the fact that it's totally against what the book prescribed

solios In reply to Norsehound [2008-01-01 13:20:15 +0000 UTC]
Indeed, B5 would be superhuge.
While I like the Leonov aesthetic, the interior never seemed to "fit" for scale in my head - it seems like it's bigger on the inside, as it were (thinking about this has caused me to plug in the movie, which I haven't seen in awhile!). Kind of a bummer that microgravity is so hard to simulate or fake with special effects - there's all kinds of neat gravitational effects from print sci-fi that could be played out on screen. One of the points I haven't seen brought up - wouldn't gravity be lighter closer to the center of the centrifuge?
