Description A simple fun creature I made for the Froad creature contest!

Creature name: Lily Claws (Lily pad crabs)

Category: Feral, with some being domesticated for aquariums

Region/climate: moderate lakes/ponds

Description:

These creatures have a membrane on the tops of their bodies that are VERY buoyant and keep them at the waters surface. They also have "gills" that breath air above the surface, that resemble a lily pad's flower. These tend to be very colorful. Their "pad" membranes can also resemble different lily pads depending on the location and what natural lily pads grow in the area. Think, naturally camouflaged.

Underside is a crab like creature with long dangling legs that can help them move in the shallow parts of the lakes where they can reach...however if blown out to deeper parts of the water they have small flipper like fins on the back sides that can be used to help maneuver them along in the hunt for food. They come equipped with two long pincer arms that are used to grab up food and grapple other lily claws for prime food hunting areas.

Lily claws are scavengers, the waters clean up crew! They will pretty much eat what ever they can. Their mouth parts work just like a "IRL" crab this way. Their eyes are also on longer stalks much like a hermit crabs eyes.

One thing about lily claws is...they never stop growing! A lily claw can keep growing as long as their molt goes well and the pond/lake has plentiful food and room to live in. Lily claws often pass on from means of predation or being flipped over and no longer being able to breath (if they are put on land or the waves grow too much and they cant right themselves)

They hatch from eggs that have only fins and can travel around easily, and only after the 3rd molt will their pad be strong enough to keep them at the surface! At this time, their gills are fully formed and can function as soon as they hit the air above, and after a few more molts, loose their small underwater gills they had as hatchlings.
