Not his fault if he didn't get a proper firebending education while back in the fire nation (why would the instructor spend time with someone who can't firebend?). He takes the basic moves and whatever else he can find...and make a big mess out of it all, ha ha! He just wants to be able to burn stuff up efficiently again.
