Description Tears from a Crying Sky
Ryan J. Shewmake

“I loved you…” was the whisper under her breath, in mute by the raging drops of rain falling, splashing the sea below the docks. The beauty of her face was covered, blocked by the long and soaking hair. Whipping her cheeks, dripping water along side her face, and dropping from her chin. She was crying… The black mascara running from her delicate eyes. I felt as if I knew her, and yet she was a mystery to me. The more I watched, the more tears she would shed; countered with my own for every drop made. The sorrowed girl turned around, unable to face me. “Why? Why does she look away in such pain?” is what I was thinking. And as the thought hit my mind, the girl was gone. Having stepped off the docks and into the bay… Knowing she couldn’t swim, she went in… Jumping in suspense, and awaking in my bed; I was covered in sweat, beams of sunlight peeking through the window’s curtains. It was the dream again… The same re-occurring dream I’ve had for the last month. The woman I don’t know, who I feel pain for, but have yet to know her…

A knock on the door was heard, followed by the voice of a slightly older woman.
“Are you up yet, Ein?”
“Kate? Yeah… Just give me a minute and I’ll be right there.”
“Alright, but hurry it up! We’re going to be late for the festival!” Replied Kate, impatient of waiting.

After getting cleaned up, the two had gotten into Kate’s car. Ein was a young man of 23. His older Half-Sister, Kate, was 30, and always had a secret eye for Ein. She didn’t care that he was her brother, because it was only because their parents had married. The two drove off, finding themselves at a park where a number of people were gathered.

“So this is the place?” Ein asked in curiosity.
“Yeah…” Kate shrugged.
“It’s not much of a festival… Looks more like a damn picnic if you ask me.”
“Be grateful you were even invited…”

It wasn’t long after stepping out of his sister’s car that Ein laid eyes on a gorgeous woman. She was sitting beneath a large oak tree, reading a book which rested in her lap. Kate saw her brother’s attention taken by the beautiful women, and gave Ein a playful slap to his head.

“If you’re going to awe over women, at least have the decency to do it away from me.” She scolded to her brother, leaving him to get a plateful of food.
“God… what’s her problem…” He murmured to himself, shaking his head and walking to the women he was looking at.
“Excuse me, miss? Might I ask what book that is you’re reading?” he asked the woman, wanting to know her better.

The woman folded and creased the corner of the page, marking where she paused and closed the book. Looking up at Ein from where she sat, she smiled and raised the book so that he may see the cover.

“The Virgin Suicides.” The woman calmly replied.
“And might I ask who the author is?”
“Jeffrey Eugenides.”
“Ah, a favorite of mine.” Ein explained, with a bit of hesitance coming from beneath his breath.
“Oh… May I ask which of his books you like most?” She asked, letting loose a slightly devious grin.

Ein didn’t respond, only standing as the nerve made him sweat, and his knees starting to shake.

“You haven’t the slightest clue about Eugenides’ work, do you?” the woman chuckled, patting the grass next to her as an offer for him to sit. Ein kindly took up on her offer, still remaining quiet from the embarrassment of his lie.
“There’s no need to feel embarrassed. Not many men around these parts do much reading…” She explained to him, attempting to relax him somewhat.
“Well… I guess you can’t really blame me for wanting sound sophisticated, right?” Responded Ein, trying to cover the flirt in his tone.
“No, no, of course not.” She chuckled again, offering him her hand.
“My name is Samantha, Samantha Miller.”
Politely accepting her hand in his own, he leaned his head forth to place a small kiss on it.
“Ein Fowler...” He replied, introducing himself.

Time continued to pass by as Ein and Samantha got to know each other. They shared their storied from their childhood; both the happy, and the sad. The two had their laughs; it was hard for one to believe it was their first time meeting. Samantha spent a lot of her time writing personal novels that she would share with anyone who may have shown interest. Being the intelligent and sophisticated type she was, Ein continued to wonder if he even had a chance with her. But he always loved a challenge…

“Samantha… May I ask you something?” asked Ein, a speck of sweat sliding from his forehead and down the side of his cheek.
Samantha watched as the drop of perspiration left his cheek, only to flail to the grass they were sitting on. “Sure, what is it?”
“I was wondering… If you’re not busy or anything, perhaps you would accompany me Saturday night with dinner?” he nervously requested, looking down at his knees with a short fear of her gaze.
“I’d love to, Ein!” She said smiling and excited.

Looking up to see her smile, he gave her a smile of his own. The day was almost over, and everyone but a small handful had already left for home. It was about time for Ein to leave as well. As he got up, he left a small area of flattened blades of grass showing where he sat. As he said his goodbyes, the car horn was beeped; Kate was growing impatient. Ein ran to the car, still holding the smile on his face even as he entered his half-sister’s car.

“Why are you so happy?” Kate asked as she began leaving the drive way.
He didn’t answer. All he could do was think of Saturday night, and wait with anticipation.

Three days passed by, and before long, nightfall hit. The doorbell rang, and Ein rushed down from his room eager to answer it. Slowly as he opened the door, standing behind it was Samantha, wearing a long black dress with glittered shoulder straps. Ein, wearing a black buttoned up long sleeve top with black slacks; he felt maybe he should have dressed more high maintenance. Shrugging his shoulders, Ein took Samantha’s arm around his own and walked her down the street to a restaurant. As they were seated, the two finally relaxed. They enjoyed each other’s company, having their delightful conversations.

When the time came to leave the restaurant, it was late, but both Samantha and Ein didn’t want to part just yet. Instead, they decided to go for a walk along the docks of a bay not far. The moon’s reflection glistened on the surface of the water. The two stopped to take a gaze, to let the image sink in.

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” Samantha said in awe.
Ein stood speechless, not looking at the bay but instead, putting his attention on her.
“Ein?”
“Oh, I’m sorry… Yeah, it really is beautiful.” He replied as his cheeks turned several shades of red in embarrassment.
Smiling with a secure feeling, she gave him a nod. “It’s alright.”

Returning the smile as a breeze swept by, chills were run down both of their spines. He brought her closer to him, embracing her in his arms so she wouldn’t catch a cold. Getting lost in the moment, Samantha brought her arms around the back of Ein’s neck. His facing turning a pink blush once again, she brought her face to his and place a gentle kiss on his lips. It was that moment that the world was shortened, all time stopping just for the two kissing on the docks. The stars continued to shine over, an angel’s wings sparkled the moon’s reflection, putting the two in love on Heaven’s spotlight.

Gently pulling away, Samantha smiled, but only frowned not long after.
“Ein, I’ll be leaving for a couple of years tomorrow…” She whispered in a saddened voice.
“What? But why?” Ein asked, not wanting to loose what he had just gained…
“School… You see, I’m only a college student, and I still have a lot of things I must do…”

Ein’s cheeks felt as if they were being pierced down by needles, unable to smile even if he tried.
“Okay… We can write to each other until then.” Suggested the upset young man.
Samantha nodded in agreement, trying to smile before kissing him again.

The next day, Samantha had left for the east coast, where she went to school and was originally from. It was right after she left that he started working on his first letter to mail to her. He wrote and he wrote, telling her everything he felt while they kissed the night before. He used such beautiful words to describe his feelings, praying that he would see her again soon, and hoping that the years will pass quickly.

Ein and Samantha had been writing to each other for days, weeks, and before they knew it, it had been nine months. They wrote to each other every other day, as much as they possible could, having spent a fortune on postal stamps.

But always lurking over Ein’s shoulders was another woman… Kate had never let her feelings for her half-brother go, and she’s been jealous with a passion of Samantha ever since the day the two met. She had watched the two that day nine months ago and how they got close, and ever since she laid eyes on them together, her heart’s been on a jealous rampage. It wasn’t long before she did something drastic, something to make Ein her own, and her own alone.

It was a gloomy and shady day; storms had been passing over on and off. The moist grounds made it humid in the afternoon, and traffic was building on the roads. It was a busy season, and Kate decided to take advantage of Ein having to work later shifts. Once the mailman arrived and delivered Ein’s mail, Kate came by and found the latest letter from Samantha. It was that instant she tore the letter to shreds, letting it fall down a stream of water which drifted along the road and into the sewers. Kate had been stealing Ein’s letters from Samantha for well over two weeks now… With every letter Ein would mail out, Kate would repeat her actions… Stealing his letters straight from the mailbox right after he left for work.

Six more months went by; it’s been over a year since Ein last Saw Samantha. Kate’s devious acts left the two out of contact for such a long time. But she wasn’t satisfied… All Ein could do was complain to her how he missed her, how he wish she would write, and all of his worries. Growing tired of his complaints, Kate finished the final touch. She wrote a fake letter to Samantha, one which would keep the two away from each other for good…

         Dear Samantha Miller,

I thought it would of some important notice to you, and thought it as something you
should really know. My name is Kate Evans, and I’m the half-sister of Ein Fowler. The separation
anxiety had grown far too painful for him to handle, and he felt he couldn’t last if he waited for
you any longer. Soon he stopped writing his letters to you, ignoring the ones you sent.

He continued with his job until he finally found someone else. He’s deeply in love with
another woman now. One he can be with every day for as long as he desires. The relationship
between you and Ein is over. He moved on, and so should you.

                                                                                                                            Sincerely,
                                                                                                                         Kate Evans

Kate mailed her letter, grinning deviously. She knew she would have Ein all to herself now. All she had to do now was convince him into forgetting about Samantha… When she had entered the kitchen, she found Ein at the dinning table, looking into a bowl of soup while he stirred it.

“Ein, you have to get over her. Obviously if she’s not writing to you, then she must have found someone else at school. If she would really just trade you for someone else, then you don’t need her… Move on, find someone better…” she tried convincing Ein.
“No, she’s not that type of person… I know she wouldn’t.” He argued back.
“How can to say she isn’t that type of person when you two weren’t together for more than a week before she left for school!? Just forget her!” Kate answered back, raising her voice with frustration.

Ein was trying to ignore what Kate had just said, still stirring the soup in front of him with a silver spoon.

“Trust me, I know far better people than her…” Kate whispered, stepping behind Ein and wrapping her arms from around the back of his neck.

Ein wanted to tell her to get off, but his voice felt as if it frozen. All he could think about was Samantha, and how he wished he could embrace her in his arms once again.

The final nine months passed, and it would be the day he and Samantha would have seen each other again. Having been separated for two years, and now not going to be able to see each other again. All Ein could think about during those last remaining nine months was how much he missed her. He showed no sign of affection toward his half-sisters seductions, feeling maybe he and Samantha still had something between them.

At that very night, Ein couldn’t sleep. He tried and tried, but he’d only toss and turn. I thought maybe if he went for a walk, he would grow a little tired and be able to sleep when he got back. So he got dressed, leaving his home to walk under the stars. Still not tired, all he could do was wonder where Samantha was, and what she was doing… His conscience drove him to the docks; rain began pouring from the night’s sky. Looking around, he recognized everything. It was here where he and Samantha had walked that night two years ago. He looked up to see if the moon could be seen, but what he did see shocked him. No sight of the moon’s light reflecting over the bay, but at the end of the dock was a long-haired woman, soaked in the rain. Ein felt the skin on his body grow tense, wing blowing the woman’s hair across her face as she cried herself in tears.

“S… Samantha…” He said below his breath, seeing the woman turn around and facing him. Her lips moved, but he couldn’t hear what she was saying… But at the same time, he knew.
“I loved you…” were the words escaping in her hidden breath. Her eyes were looking straight into his in a distance, drops of tears falling with every second she saw him. She felt an unbearable pain from seeing him again, turning herself around and forcing herself not to look into his eyes. But she felt him staring at her… The wind was roaring, gusting against the woman as she stared blankly into the bay.

Everything was familiar again, Ein thought about the nightmares he always had, he thought about how they always ended, and he forced himself into tears when he thought about it. He rushed to the docks to grab Samantha, but before reaching her, it was too late… The woman he loved stepped over the docks and walked into the enraged dark waters of the bay. She couldn’t swim, and neither could Ein… He fell to his knees at the ledge of the docks and cried to himself for only seconds. “Nothing about me matters anymore…” is all he could repeat in his mind. “I have nothing to risk, anymore… If I can’t be with her here, then can I be with her… there…?” The thoughts crossed his mind many times, what felt like a never ending battle with his mind was but seconds after her splash into the water… Ein decided… He smiled to himself, still baring tears along his cheeks and eyes. He felt there wasn't anything for him here; there wasn't anything else he would ever need. Ein dived into the bay, head first. He kicked his legs, going deeper and deeper into the waters. It wasn’t long before he caught up with Samantha, already passed out in the drifting… He held her close to him as they continued drifting to the bottom of the bay. His chest began to tighten, running out of breath to continue on… “Without you, I’m nothing… Without you, there isn’t anything… You’re everything I need, and the last thing I would ever desire… The time you drift to Heaven’s gate, I will be there right next to you…” was the last thought that ran through his mind. Hopelessly in love, the two bodies drifted in the water. Their souls were now together at last, after two long years of isolation from each other, they would be together as long as they desired. The storm calmed, and the raining stopped. God’s final gift to two passionate souls was raining Heaven’s light upon their grave, letting the sun’s blaze shine the waters they met. The reflecting beauty where they spent their first love, their first kiss, and their last breaths… Living happily and lovingly in the next life that awaits them.

I have multiple thoughts on it, but I'm fine with it. :3

It's not exactly where I used to live. Just a mile distance between the two.
