Description
Simba really got the shaft in SP, huh? Mufasa ain't gonna be tossing out wisdom during his nanna nap! Kion stubs his toe? Ole' granddaddy is there for him in a flash! Simba faces a real dilemma that could potentially put the Pridelands in jeopardy? BORING! You're on your own, asshole!I know Mufasa was a great and popular character and all, but I do kind of wish they left him alone after the first one. Every time his ghost pops up all casual-like, I feel it takes away from the dramatic and unexpected majesty of the scene in the original. The Lion Guard is the worst offender, but Simba's Pride dipped its feet too far into this as well. Seeing Mufasa during 'He Lives in you' in SP, and in flashback/painting form in TLG was great, but they should have stopped there. He's dead, leave him be!
I want to state that I'm not bashing Lion Guard or Mufasa in this comic, although it seems like it. It's just something I thought about every time Mufasa pops up in an instant whenever his name is called in TLG.
I found this comic in my pictures folder half done for about 2 years, so I decided to finish it off finally!

We don't even really know what their duties are in-universe. IRL monarchies, king and queen titles are functionally identical so long as they're seen as legitimate holders of the thrown and not king/queen-in-name-only-by-marriage. Since there wasn't any talk of Kiara needing to find a king, I assume their queen title is legitimate. In the case of IRL prides, all males really have to do that's different from females is beat the snot out of other males. Especially since I've seen enough documentaries with female-led prides for 'queens' to not be much of an exception and seem to act about the same as males (only real difference seems to be the lack of cubs and leading the group in beating the snot out of female in their territory. That's also not taking terrain into account, which can alter pride dynamics and general behavior by a surprising amount.)
I'm straying from the topic, but if you're interested in more details [or sharing what you know] I'm up for it!
Back to Sarabi! Yeah, the whole timeline of the lion king generally confuses me. Mainly because it wasn't fully thought through beyond making just enough coherent since in each respective installment. Before the Lion Guard I assumed Sarabi's death was somewhere around the time jump in SP when Kiara went on her first hunt. Mainly because it didn't make sense for a seemingly healthy lioness in a relatively peaceful environment to die within a few months, but 2 or 3 years later didn't feel like much of a stretch. Since LG took place before SP, I just slotted her in there for the timeline and ignored the series beyond the few things that caught my interest. Which I think would put her death somewhere before Kion's scar, for me.
All that aside, I do like Mufasa, I just wish Sarabi got her time to shine as much as he does. Or at least a confirmation on when she (and presumably Sarafina) died.

You don't know though (no one does) but a bite from a venomous animal could take down a Lioness, or a sudden illness, an infection from the fight wounds, an accident of some kind - it doesn't have to be old age. She could have died at any point after Simba's roar, she wasn't even shown at the end scene of the first movie.
I wish she got more screentime too, there's a guy on here that is upset that the Hyenas from the original got no screentime in TLG, he should be thankful he's not a die-hard Sarabi fan - because she is NOWHERE to be found in the follow up films! Not even in the midquel.

True, true. Which is also why I like your art of Sarabi and Rafiki in the clouds, feels like some kind of closure (even though it's about the voice actors.) that we'll canonically never get.

But what about when Simba was a cub and thought he had killed his own father?

Simba forgot all about that life though. Even in the scene where Mufasa DID come to him, he accuses Simba of forgetting him. In TLG Mufasa doesn't appear to Kion unless he asks, and there was a period of time where Kion didn't call to Mufasa because he thought that he'd be hated for his scar. Young Simba never called upon his father because he was living that Hakuna Matata life.

Even so, Mufasa didn't come to Simba because he called him.

Yeah that is probably my biggest gripe with The Lion Guard
