Maple Sweet and Aether
Maple Sweet and Aether grew up in two very different circles, but oddly similar circumstances. Aether grew up in a more cosmopolitan section of Cloudsdale and was raised by a family that could only be described as stuck up. In his family’s eyes, he was never good enough. They would lecture him on his future, telling him he needed to follow in his father and grandfather’s hoofsteps to take over as a manager at one of the cloud factories. These lectures often lead to Aether daydreaming while watching the clouds. He tried fighting his fascination with unique cloud formations, thinking it was too close to the life his family had in mind for him, but after a particularly heated argument with his grandfather, he found himself wandering off and taking his frustrations out in a creative way. He had always admired cloud formations, but Aether had never helped to create one. After the argument, he created one of the most beautiful formations that had ever been seen and earned his cutie mark while doing so.

Maple’s family mainly kept to themselves, preferring to do their jobs and spend time together. This way of life was easy for them considering they all had talents that worked together in a “family business” of sorts. Whether it be making sure that crops got the proper amount of rain and sunshine or coaxing birds and butterflies to help carry seeds and pollinate plants, Maple Sweet’s family all worked toward the goal of creating lush, beautiful plants for the earth ponies and unicorns, even if they never got to see it up close due to their preference for staying in the clouds. Maple followed in her family’s hoofsteps and gained her cutie mark young when she noticed a talent for wind dispersal of seeds. Despite being content with her family, she could never shake the curiosity that she harbored for the product of her and her family’s work. One day, while helping to guide some seeds, Maple let her curiosity get the better of her and she flew down to see one of the first forests she ever helped to plant. While she was exploring, admiring the trees and flowers, Maple heard a crash and rushed toward it, not knowing any better. That is when she met Aether, who had gotten more than a little distracted by a nearby cloud formation while racing his best friend Stormchaser and ended up crash landing into the forest that Maple just so happened to be in. For these two, it was love at first sight, even Stormchaser could see that once he caught up with his clumsy friend. It didn’t take long after they met for the two to get married and start their own family, promising never to pressure their kids into anything, like Aether’s parents did.

Fluttershy
Maple Sweet and Aether’s first foal, Fluttershy, was born prematurely. Due to this, she was always a bit behind the development of other pegasi foals her age. While others were learning to fly without help from their parents, Fluttershy still had a hard time just hovering in one place. She always felt insecure about her weak wings and it only got worse as she got older and other foals wouldn’t include her at school. She became incredibly shy, preferring not to go anywhere without her parents or Rainbow Dash, who was as close as a sister to her. Much like with Twilight, I’m keeping the sonic rainboom as the reason that Fluttershy got her cutie mark, but instead of it representing a communication with animals, it represents a nurturing nature and her desire to help rehabilitate hurt animals.

Zephyr Breeze
Due to his parents focusing on helping his older sister, Zephyr Breeze grew up fairly unsupervised. He went wherever the wind took him, something that lasted into his young adult years. While everypony around him had gotten their cutie marks years before, Zephyr had no idea what he was meant to do, and he didn’t really mind. He liked his life of just doing whatever he wanted and not taking anything too seriously. His parents never pressured him, not wanting to cause resentment between them, but there came a point where it was obvious that Zephyr needed to do something. They tried to help him find something he would like to do, but nothing they suggested clicked with him. Finally, when it seemed like they had tried everything, Zephyr stumbled across an article by Trenderhoof. Reading it made Zephyr realize that he could continue living the life of travel that he preferred and make it work by getting odd jobs here and there. He got his cutie mark then and there, knowing that as long as he could see the world, he would be happy.
