Description Probably the tastiest plate of thing I have, of late. I had this all, for myself. Not even sharing it with anyone.

So addictive... I really have to go there again. I enjoyed this, at a place called The Merry Men. At least I don't have to go to Canada, for this. Mmmmm! Cheese curds and potatoes and gravy... who would have thought?!

Yeah, I hate to say it but that's one pathetic looking Poutine.. that'd make some Quebecois swear in french for sure.  lol.. sorry.  Needs way more cheese and the sauce is def. thin, kinda like normal chicken gravy.  Poutine gravy is typically much thicker.

Have you had a chance to sample other poutines since then?  Here it's everywhere... every fast food restaurant and most restaurants sells them here.. almost a sin not to carry poutines.

Poutine is not easily found here, so obviously this was a terrible take on the "real deal". Pretty sure the Asian food there won't be as good as you can get in Asia.

I'd try more when I get to Canada. I'd like to try them with all the crazy toppings.

Two of my favs are the poutine-pizza and the pizza-tine.  Nope, not the same thing at all.

Poutine-Pizza is a pizza topped with a tons of fries, cheese curds and poutine gravy... Pizza with a poutine as a topping if you will.
Pizzatine on the other hand is fries topped with pizza sauce, green peppers, onions, mushrooms, ground beef, pepperonis, bacon and topped with loads of cheese then grilled.  Poutine - pizza style.

Both are as heart stoppingly delicious as they sound.

Italian poutine is also very popular here.. Bolognese sauce on top of the cheese..

Another fav. of mine is the wings poutine... yeah.. poutine but with boneless wings, you can have it with wing sauce or without (just regular gravy)... and I love the spice.

Hotdog Poutine is a local favourite in my hometown.. a 12" hotdog topped with a delicious cantine-style poutine.

Poutines... so good.

The only?  Oh I would have such wonderous food to show you!

I traveled the entire country and have discovered amazing culinary dishes.. we're definitely not only about poutines... even if that is a ridiculously amazing culinary invention.   It seems each community has it's own signature dish, some include "poutine a trou" or "poutine acadienne" and amazing Ployes, Maple cedar plank sockeye salmon, fiddleheads and Bison burgers.  Nova scotian Donair, Aviateur Bagels, butter tarts and sugar pies... native salmon jerky and Whipped soapberry...

Yep, we have some pretty amazing food up here.

What really is Canadian food? It's gonna be different depending on where I go, but the salmon, and maple-related stuff aside from poutine are the ones that I know that I have to try!

It'd be a long time before I'd get there to visit. I hope that someone will open up a Canadian restaurant here.

Here, if you ask them, they give slices of jalopeno peppers in there and it makes it extra awesome!

Glorious poutine. It's sad I can't find anywhere that serves it, or even a store that sells cheese curds, since I moved to the US.

Hmm, I don't recall seeing poutine at all in the States either. I was so excited to find this in the menu one day so I ordered.

You have, indeed. But don't get the idea that you can make me do you bidding............unless you have more poutine.

Sadly, that's a weak poutine. But it's a good start. Poutines are often RICH in calories; they have to look like they might give you a heart attack. This one only looks like it'll give you hypertension.

Check this example out, for a traditional/classic poutine: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Pou…

- Thick fries, heavy & rich gravy, plenty of cheese curds partially melted. If the curds don't melt as you stir it, the fries & gravy aren't hot enough. The gravy also shouldn't be too salty; the more salt, the more likely it's covering up sub-par/non-fresh ingredients. That's a dead giveaway.

Oh gosh the way you describe it, makes what I had seem so pale in comparison.

Well, I suppose I could not expect much, as it was from a bar.

To me, the heaviness was just perfect for me.

Aaah! I didn't mean to make you sad. If you enjoyed it, that's really what matters!

Poutines can be off, even here in Canada, so no worries. My partner went out west a couple years ago to visit family & the restaurant served him what they called a 'poutine'. It was a super salty mess of fries with shredded cheddar cheese on it. He complained that it wasn't as advertized & they responded, "We can't be all fancy like it is out East!"

If they serve a dish & call it by its official name, then it should actually BE the dish they advertise. Terrible cheesy fries =/= Poutine. Ever.

Now you got me craving a messy poutine. I may have to pick one up this week from Spuds & show you what we have for calorie-loaded heartattack-inducing dish here. And this is just the Ontario stuff; it's even more rich in Quebec nearby.

Nah, I was not sad at all, don't be silly!

I am sure if you go to the tourist places in Canada, they won't serve the "real" ones, maybe. They assume tourists do not know better, so they get away with it.

I saw the poutine. Good lord, what a mess. Delicious mess, it was. MOOOOORE beef!

Ebonsong In reply to nosugarjustanger [2014-07-18 22:51:26 +0000 UTC]

Very possibly they could get away with it. But locals might have some input on what should be on the menu. I guess it depends on how much of a tourist trap the area is in.

Haha it was a mess, for sure.

creaturenight In reply to nosugarjustanger [2014-07-14 07:59:34 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I definitely know how to do it.  It is honestly simple to make.

thick cut fries, usually a brown gravy over the fries with cheddar cheese curds but any curds work.

Seems like a lot of investment, for something so simple.
