The Story of Alexandra the Green

Some ill-informed parent got a baby iguana for their young son, not recognizing that reptiles are very, very different that dogs or cats, and that young children, let alone many adults do not have the capacity to care for an iguana. I have reason to believe they fed her dog kibble or some such other things that iguanas are most definitely not supposed to eat. When I got her nearly her entire skeleton was decalcified. Her back was saddled, she had multiple broken bones and she was absolutely terrified of people. It has taken me close to four years to get her to a reasonably tame state, and as you can probably tell she is still very small.

Please, don't get pets you cannot care for.

Agreed
In my country is illegal to have wild colombian fauna as pets (including iguanas, turtles, parrots, etc) but there are many illegal things that are still done. These cases are very sad and I'm afraid to say I've seen a lot of them.

While I wouldn't go so far as to make it illegal, there is a (very) large number of people who are sadly misinformed about how to care for reptiles.

Iguanas are somewhat endangered species, as well as some kinds of turtles, thats why its illegal.
About two weeks ago I found a turtle living in awful conditions, it was fed with dog food and lettuce, which leaved her with a need for calcium and other vitamins. Plus, she lived in a box for kids to play with.
I took her with me and sent her to the re-introducing program of my state, where she was cured and freed in her environment.

I identify with these cases a lot because I see them a lot. Its very sad that people buy pets that they don't know how to take care of....

As his story states above... Lex was in a similar situation. I just hope I'm giving him what he needs.

Pets that are not taken care of is a sad, but very real problem.

That is of course not to say that there aren't many, devoted herp keepers out there that give their reptiles a good life (I hope I'm one of them)... but there are far too many people who think "Oh, how cool it would be to have an exotic pet! I think I'll get one without doing any research!" ... and then they do.

"Oh Im gonna buy a snake, I heard they're cool! I'll hug her and love her and give her rice and beans!"
Its good to know that there are good reptile caregivers like you

He's four... but he's kinda... really runty. He's a rescue and as such was extremely malnourished when I got him.. it seems to have stunted his growth.
