The television screen went black. Sophie felt so restless, being confined to her home. But with all of the panic being created from the recent criminal activity, her parents wouldn't let her out of their sight.

She looked at her watch, and then at the calendar on the wall. One week ago, exactly, was the time of the first meteor crashing to the ground. Her parents were so afraid that she would get hurt, so they decided to postpone her trainer registration once again.

Sophie was now 16 years and one week old. In some of the smaller towns, children are allowed to start their adventures at age 10. But here in Pewter City, children must be 14 in order to register. For Sophie however, the required parental signature had proven itself impossible to get.

"Mom, I'm gonna..." Most of her friends had left home years ago. Sophie was, in all likelihood, the only teenager in the City, save for those just passing by. There really was nothing to do, save for volunteer in some 'safe' place. "...go to the museum, I guess."

"Okay, dear, be back before sundown, okay?" Her mom smiled as Sophie walked out the door.

"Whatever."

The sun shined brightly overhead. A lot of the local Pokémon were energetic today, with several flocks of Pidgey flying around in the park. Sophie, conversely, had her head down and was dragging her feet. "This sucks. I just want to go see the world." She hoped someone would pass by and sweep her off her feet into a world of adventure. Someone brave and strong that could show her the ropes until she was strong herself.

Today, though, was not her day.

Instead, she spotted a Pokémon that was not native to this area. It looked to be sleeping, leaning against a tree in the park. "You're a Hypno... how did you get here?"

"Ah, what a smart girl!" An oddly dressed man appeared almost instantly beside the sleeping Pokémon. "Hypno here came with me! I am the Great Mesmero, hypnotist extrodinaire! I have come to give a demonstration of my skills at the local museum. Tell me, do you know where that is?"

Sophie remembered the curator talking about a psychic lecture and demonstration that would be occuring. She guessed this must be the guy. Displaying as much energy as always, she said, "Yeah, I work there. Follow me."

"Splendid!" The hypnotist returned his Pokémon back to its decorated Poké Ball and followed Sophie toward the museum. Along the way, he couldn't help but speak his mind. "Hypnosis really is a strange thing. It's not quite mind control, as many might think, but rather, it's a..."

Sophie wasn't really listening. Though she did work at the museum, she was hardly interested in learning. From her many conversations with researchers, she had learned how to fake paying attention quite well. As the man beside her spoke, Sophie nodded her head and offered an understanding "ah" whenever there was a pause in his speech.

At the museum, Sophie was asked to manage the admissions desk for the afternoon. She would be relieved in time for the demonstration, but until then, she was stuck at the desk.

Having nothing else to do, Sophie browsed the newspaper. Headlines included 'Stones from meteors showing no potential for evolution, says Prof. Elm of Johto', 'Imminent extinction of Slowpoke averted upon discovery of new colony', and 'Children and adults alike participate in Bug Catching Contest'.

"You certainly like to stay well informed, Sophie." Dr. Go, a researcher at the museum, stood across from the desk. "Anything interesting today?"

"They found some Slowpoke. Is that interesting?" Sophie said, not even looking up from the paper.

"Actually, yeah. They say that some Psychic Pokémon have been acting strangely since the meteors. Maybe the sudden emergence of these creatures is connected?" Dr. Go was fascinated by the possibility, finding it hard to contain his excitement.

Meanwhile, Sophie wasn't even fazed. "Dunno."

"Anyway, I found some people trying to profit from the meteors. Look at this." He held out a necklace. It was a simple choker with a small moon shaped pendant attached. The pendant appeared to be made out of the same material found inside of the meteors. "You want it? I have no use for it."

Sophie was surprised that something interesting actually came to the museum. "Are you sure? Wouldn't your wife want it?"

"I'm not married. And my girlfriend hates it. She literally told me that she hated it." Sophie had tuned out again as she adored the jewelry. It fit just right on her.

Later that day, the Great Mesmero began his demonstration of a Psychic Pokémon's ability. His Hypno glowed with a faint blue light as it used its techniques. After doing some basic levitation and parlor tricks to impress the children, he moved on to his specialty.

"Hypnotism can be a dangerous thing, children. It can be used for recreational purposes, yes, when used properly. Hypno and I will now demonstrate. But first, a volunteer?"

All the kids in the audience were begging to be the volunteer, but Mesmero had a different idea in mind. "Ah, in the back, the girl I met earlier today. Would you like to be my assistant?"

Sophie immediately realized he was talking about her. "Not particularly." She didn't want to do it, but at the urging of Dr. Go and the other researchers, she took a seat on the stage.

"Now, I want you to relax. You'll feel no pain at all. Just relax and listen to my voice..." Sophie felt herself slipping, but the man's voice was comforting.

"Hypno, now use Hypnosis..." The researchers all noticed it immediately. The blue light around the Hypno had turned green. Only Dr. Go noticed the the same light on the necklace around Sophie's neck.

"So tell me, Sophie, what is your favorite Pokémon?" Mesmero had done this routine many times. He would hypnotically convince his volunteer to act like their favorite Pokémon. It was always a crowd pleaser.

"Vulpix...cute..." Sophie muttered.

"Well, it suits you. When I snap my fingers, I want you to become a Vulpix. Believe you are, and always have been, a Vulpix. Now then, 3... 2... 1..."

SNAP

The green light now enveloped Sophie. "Hypno, cancel the Hypnosis now! Quickly!" The Pokémon motioned that it had already done so. It appeared that this phenomenon was out of their hands.

For Sophie, she felt the hypnosis fade. She had never been hypnotized before, so it was a strange experience for her. She sat down on the stool, wondering why everyone was staring at her. She had no idea how long she had been hypnotized, so she hoped she hadn't been forced to do anything embarrassing.

"Sophie, can you hear me?" Dr. Go stepped on stage and approached her.

"Yeah, I can hear you. What did he make me do?" Sophie was sure now that man had made her do something she would never do.

"Sophie, you're a..." He wasn't sure how to say it. He honestly wasn't even sure if it was real. "...you're a Vulpix..."

"Huh?" Sophie turned around and saw her many tails and red fur. She considered it for a bit, and then responded. To the surprise of the researchers, she said, "Well, yeah, I've always been a Vulpix."
