Description
The girl called Tiger slept for nearly three days, tossing and turning in her bad of grass. Lion watched over her as often as she could, only leaving her company on Saturday night. When she finally awoke to the opening of her cage, she took a moment to survey her surroundings once more. Looking at the reflection in the water bowl, she noticed her face had changed significantly, covered now by fur, whiskers, and a dark nose. Her human resemblance was nearly gone by this point.
Looking at the neighboring cages, she saw Puma and Panther had already left. Lion was gone, too, though she quickly reappeared at the open door to Tiger's cage. "You're awake! Are you feeling rested?" Tiger nodded, producing a smile on her neighbor's face. "That's good, I'm glad! So, um, would you like to go on a tour now?" Lion seemed nervous, but those feelings of anxiety were lifted when Tiger nodded once more.
They left out from the Big Cats section together, visiting several of the other sections of The Zoo. They had brief conversations with the residents of the Primates section, who all seemed just as energetic and carefree as Lion. Some of the brooding Reptiles might have been good companions for Panther. The residents of the Aquatic section commented on Tiger's recent transformation, telling her it wasn't as bad as it could have been. "It's quite hard to breathe when your gills haven't fully developed, actually." The Clownfish let out a hearty laugh, so as to not make the girls feel bad.
"They let us freely walk around The Zoo at night, as long as we get back to our cages by dawn. We can't go into any restricted areas either. But, I'm glad they let us do this." Lion looked down at her feet, her hair, one of the few parts of her human body remaining, falling in front of her face. "Despite everything bad that's happened to all of us, everyone is in such a good mood. They're all in high spirits, so how can I not be, right?" Lion looked up with a smile, and Tiger returned the gesture.
Lion happily chatted along until they reached the section of The Zoo called Farm. "Oh hey, there's Puma." The two girls definitely identified their neighbor and companion, but something was interesting about the normally fierce and angry girl. "Is she... laughing?"
Puma was indeed smiling and laughing, idly chatting away with someone in a cage. It didn't seem like there was any response from withing the cage, and as the two eavesdroppers neared, they confirmed this was a one-way conversation.
"Hey, Puma!" Lion's shouting caused Puma's face to return to its usual state, pointed eyes and bared teeth. "Whatcha talking about?"
"It's none of your fucking business. Now get lost!" Puma would have normally scared the comparably timid Lion away, but it didn't work this time. Lion's confidence was swelling after such a nice night with Tiger.
"Come on, I never get to see you smile and laugh! I want to know and talk with you too!" Lion playfully chased around an angry Puma, though her anger didn't seem dangerous.
Tiger, meanwhile, turned to the cage to see who had brought on Puma's smile. She was surprised to see a girl standing there, in the center of the cage. Even though she was looking right at her, what happened next caused the three cat girls to jump.
"Stop it!" The girl in the cage shouted, tears quickly streaming down her face. "How can you idiots be so happy? Don't you know what this place is? All you have when you come here is bad memories, pain and sin, and those only get worse every week. Just yesterday, didn't it happen? Ugly men, perverts, they paid their fees and did their way with you!"
Tiger's eyes went wide, finally succumbing to the realization of what The Zoo was, even though she had known it before. She turned to Lion and Puma, who both turned their gaze away, focusing only on the dirt beneath them.
"We're slaves here! There's nothing to be happy about in this place. We'll..." She paused, hesitating, before wiping her eyes and continuing. "We'll die here! Not knowing any life other than sex slaves in collars! What's there to be happy about?"
The girl in the cage fell to her knees, burying her face in her hands. "I can't even leave my cage..."
For about an hour, they all sat in silence. The three cat girls sat underneath a tall tree nowhere near that girl's cage. They couldn't say anything. They couldn't do anything to comfort each other or themselves. Lion cried, curling up to cover her face and feminine parts of her body. Tiger felt guilt, having slept through the weekly event mentioned earlier. She shouldn't have been so lucky when her companions had to suffer so much. Puma just stared, unable to feel anything.
The next voice failed to cheer them up, startle them, or cause any emotion at all.
"What the Pig girl said is true. We'll die here as slaves if we don't do anything. The happiness here at The Zoo is shallow. If we want to experience actual happiness, and to have a chance to remember the happiness we felt before all of this, we must kill the Zookeeper."
Panther leapt down from the tree and walked away, back toward their cages. The three girls turned and stared at his back, not saying a word in response.
