Description
This picture was created for the Not For Sale contest, [link] , which is aimed at educating people in hopes that they will be able to make a difference in the fight against human trafficking. The theme of this photograph is “Who the Victims Are”The facts are from either [link] or [link] both are sites that are trying to make a positive difference in the world. Keep in mind that there are multiple sites and organizations fighting against human trafficking that I have not mentioned.
UPDATE: this piece won the best in photography!!!!
27 million people are enslaved today. When most people think of slavery, they think of someone contained by chains, shackles, ropes, and other devices that are used to physically keep someone captive. If someone were to see a person being treated this way, many would jump to their rescue. Of course such scenarios exist where our eyes can physically see that a person is being held captive; however, believe it or not, the most frequent practice is to use less obvious techniques to keep someone captive.
Less obvious techniques include:
-Isolation from the public, family members, religious and ethnic groups
-Confiscation of identification documents
-Use of threats/violence on victims and/or their family
-Threatening to shame victims
-Informing victims they will be imprisoned or deported for immigration violations
-Controlling the victim’s money
A victim could literally be anyone. Most people are aware that some victims of human trafficking are forced into the prostitution or the sex entertainment industry. However, trafficking also occurs in forms of labor exploitation, such as domestic servitude, restaurant work, janitorial work, sweatshop factory work and migrant agricultural work.
Why is fighting against human trafficking so hard? Well, most of the time, we can’t just look at a person’s face and definitely say whether or not they are a victim. In fact, more often than not, victims of human trafficking can’t be recognized by the human eye alone. People don’t have a magic bar code on them which the world can scan and definitively tell whether or not they have been a victim. A victim could literally be anyone.
Faves, features, comments and watches are always welcome and extremely appreciated. I always try to support those who support me, especially watchers, but sometimes life is busy, so thank you for any support in advance! If you use this picture, please send a link!

Congrats on the Best in Photography win, this is truly a powerful message even in it's simplicity. This really is worth more than a thousand words. As a person who was once held captive against my will for a short period of time, I am one of the survivors, I lived to see past my forced existence, to heal.. many around the world never have that opportunity. They live in some form of enslavement forever. It breaks my heart and makes me feel powerless to help others overcome the way I was lucky enough to be able to. But images like this really do speak out and change lives..

This speaks volumes. I like the simplicity of this and the plain white shirt and tousled hair of the model.

'I could be anyone', hands covering her face, can't be identified, could be anyone. I like this.

The message of the photo is pretty obvious, but with the background information, I really like it.
In addition to your interpretation, the person seems to be shamed, hiding her face with her hands in front of it. Abused people feel always ashamed for themselves because they feel helpless against their situation and the people who exploit them. I also like the plain white background. The person who is in front of it looks tiny based on the relation to her size with the high wall.
