Description
PTERODACTYL SCREECH OF VICTORY i'm not satisfied with the rain but oh wellFlarekit knows what rain is. He knows what wind is, too, and "flooding" (a brand new word) is an easy concept to wrap his head around. Lots of water means lots of puddles. He's never seen lightning before, though, and there's not a description in the world that could have prepared him for the deafening crack that sounds off in the distance. It's louder than anything he's ever heard, and he flattens his ears to his skull in an effort to muffle the noise. The flash that follows is bright enough to blind, fingers of light cleaving the sky like a warrior's claws.
Flarekit scans the forest for something useful. There are damp, dark trees and damp, dark ferns and damp, dark bushes in damp, dark soil, but he knows he can't just crouch beneath a plant and hope for the best. Climbing a tree would be appealing if not for the sky-fire. If he was strong and cool like a real adult, he would... Um.
He would find something that lightning hates (a grown-up told him that lightning likes metal and wood and can catch things on fire, which is not good at all). Rocks, maybe? Rocks are the only fireproof thing he can think of. If he climbs on top of them the big puddles won't make him wet, and if he burrows into them the lightning won't make him dead. If he climbs on top of some and burrows into others he'll be safe from both threats, and the wind won't make him cold, though that seems like less of a problem... unless he gets wet. Which he won't. Maybe.
The black clouds churning on the horizon send a shiver of fear and excitement down Flarekit's spine. Another peal of thunder rolls through the forest; lightning strikes. He picks up a trot, letting his nose lead him and his eyes guide him and his ears tell him what the weather is doing. He can smell rain in the air, but it isn't falling yet. He still has time. Not a lot, but definitely a little. The thunder is picking up, though. It claps again, louder this time. Closer. The arc of lightning that follows is bright enough to illuminate the forest, and he zeroes in on what appears to be an outcropping of flat blue-grey stone just moments before the flare is gone and he's plunged back into darkness.
It isn't nighttime, not really. Some awesome cats are using awesome magic to make everything look dark and scary, but he knows it's daytime outside the, um, what had they called it? Simlutation? Simlemation?
He picks up the pace, tail low enough to catch on sticks and leaves. As he gets closer to the outcropping he realizes that it's a cave, and an expression of satisfaction crosses his face. The whole thing is huge (at least to him, but he knows he's small). It sits up on rocky little cliff, wide-mouthed and only kinda' frightening. There are things that look like teeth hanging from the roof and jutting up from the floor, which causes unease to slither through his body, but he doesn't hesitate. It looks like maybe it could eat him (if it's alive and also a monster), but it's sprinkling now and he knows he needs to find shelter before it really starts pouring.
It takes some effort to get to the entrance, since he has to struggle to find purchase in an inconvenient combination of stone and loose, rocky dirt, but he likes to climb (he does it all the time on his own!!) and after a couple of minutes he manages to find his way inside. Luck seems to be on his side, because the moment he's under cover the sky opens up and unleashes a torrent of rain that roars nearly as loud as the thunder had. There's a distant spear of lightning; it lights the cavern just enough for him to see that it's deeper than any cave he's explored before, but he decides to stay where he is, sitting with his tail curled around his paws as he watches the storm rage. It's much prettier than he'd thought it would be. Relaxing, even. He wonders idly when the grown-ups will make it stop, and finds that he doesn't want them to. Not yet.
When the water rises enough to make him worry, he finds a couple of loose rocks and pushes them together so that he can hop on top.
He likes this weather.

"Are you okay?" Missy asked a little warily, coming forward after the trial was finished. "That... that was close."

Flarekit looks caught somewhere between shock and embarrassment. He offers Missy a crooked smile, flicking a water droplet from one ear. "Oh gosh, mama'." If he'd known metal thingies could be in rock thingies he might not have gone in the cave at all! Next time he would be better. If he got hit by a scary sky snake and it set him on fire and he died -- well, he couldn't be a Hero. "I'm okay. I promise!"

"Alright," Missy says a little doubtfully, pulling him close and grooming him a bit. "I've... got to go to now, as... as long as you're alright."

"Mmmhmm." Flarekit snuggles her a little, enjoying the grooming. He doesn't want her to go - he wants to cuddle her lots and lots - but he knows she has stuff to do, so he pulls back and gives her a beaming grin. His heart isn't racing so fast anymore; he feels lots better. "Have fun doing your thingies! I bet it'll be so super great! I'm gonna' do a recommendation mission in a little bit for Amazing Hero Firkeeper and I'm very excited and also I love you!!"

"Thank you, and have fun, Flare," Missy says, returning his smile before making her way off.

You sit in the quiet cave full of wonder for a short time, watching the lightning in the distance and the rain come trickling down. The water level down below is rising higher and higher, and you're safe from the puddles where you are up above. You have a few minutes of quiet solitude and awe before you hear another crash, so loud and so bright that it roars through your ears and lights up your world. The lightning struck the cave you were in, arcing towards tiny metal deposits in the walls, and with no place to go, bounced around your sanctuary like a violent serpent. An adult was quick to deflect the lightning and come and get you, and Hop followed them, laughing a little.
"You alright kid? That was loud! You did a good job avoiding the floods, but shallow caves like this can be dangerous in a lightning storm." He winked. "You're alright though, and I can tell you were enjoying yourself in the quiet for awhile. The world's full of beautiful things and natural wonders, isn't it? Here's your score!"

Oh gosh, thank you so much! ;0; I used a few photos of thunder storms to help me pick out a color palette (I don't usually do that, and I'm realizing I should; it was super helpful).
