Description My new guard bird - she is fierce! She scares away any other bird that gets near her food source. (For anyone who is not familiar with my new model, she a female, Ruby-throated hummingbird.)

This is an experiment with HDR and PS - tring to bring out her beauty.

Advanced critique is most welcome.

you're more than welcome! I'd love to see a hummingbird in real life one day! seeing them in photos and motheaten stuffed ones in glass cases in the natural history museum aren't quite the same are they!

No - it really is something to see them flying about - sorry you don't have them there. But I'm sure you have many things we don't have here - like rain perhaps?! haha

She doesn't look fierce. She looks hungry.

Excellent catch, Cindy.

Thanks - she was a little of both. Actually, she was more fierce than hungry, but ya... I survived it.

Thank you and yes, it is a she. The males are much more colorful, but they won't get as close as the females. Appears the females are braver than the males! HA! Girls rule!

Thanks! Ya - I'm gonna see if I can learn more about this HDR stuff. It did a nice job here, but I really didn't know what I was doing...

Oh wow. This is really splendid. There is some great stuff happening with the light.

now-voyager In reply to Baculus-Rising [2007-08-31 17:19:53 +0000 UTC]

Thank you - it was a dark pic due to the way I have shoot this out my window. It was cloudy with patches of light hitting my patio - but she was not luminous enough.

I am playing with a trial version of Photomatix and thought I would experiment with this file. I didn't have 3 exposures, so I made 3 different ones in RAW and "pretended" - then I just played around. I am totally clueless about HDR. I just wanted to try the new software and fix this pic because I liked it so much. The original is not a bad photo - just too dark.

Thanks for the nice words - nice that you validate my work (and me) - means so much to me.

I didn't get on with Photomatix. It didn't seem subtle enough. But here it has worked wonderfully.

The jury is out and will be for quite some time as I try to understand exactly what I'm supposed to do with it. I downloaded the freeware version first. It wasn't the same as what they use in the tutorials, so I got the trial "Pro" version - used that - found it rather clumsy to work with, but put that down to my lack of experience and knowledge of how it is supposed to work. I'll play with it some more and then pass judgment. I need to do some landscape shots to play with - I don't think HDR is exactly what macro and close-up images are screaming for. But, I will allow that I can be wrong once and a while (This message will self-destruct in exactly 5 minutes)

Thanks Duncan - got lucky and "artsy-fartsy" as Nigel says. Playing with HDR techniques - mostly just to bring out the highlights in this one.

ringtaillemur [2007-08-30 22:48:11 +0000 UTC]

Looking at it fullview, it looks as if she's eyeballing you, waiting for you to try anything. Great shot, i love the soft unfocused light of the background, and the way the blur of the wings seems to just blend into it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

now-voyager In reply to ringtaillemur [2007-08-30 22:56:58 +0000 UTC]

Thanks - it was a lucky shot - I think she visually scans everything around her constantly. And in every picture I have ever taken of her, her wings are a blur (unless she's on her perch) they move so fast! I don't have good enough equipment to get the wings "blurless" (but maybe someday!)
