Description
Consider this sort of a test for a comic series I want to work on. Basically a comic series poking fun at technology.OK, the story behind this. No offense to any Apple users around here, but most of the people I know that own one of them are pretty smug about it. All I hear is "they're so easy to use and they never crash, they have no viruses, and blah blah blah..."
My opinion about them is that the Macintosh is not, nor will it ever be a perfect machine. Sure it runs an easy to use Unix-like OS making it more stable than any Windows based machine, but it's not completely immune to viruses or hardware failure. It's not to say I don't think they're well built machines, but they're just not perfect like Apple wants us to think they are.
So here, when Milo buys a Mac thinking he'll never need Collin's help when using it, ends up finding out just how wrong he is.
Again no offense to any Mac users around here.

Again, I don't mean to offend any Mac users. And I'll admit, it's a well built machine. But it's not by any means perfect, or the solution for people who just plain out don't know how to actually use a computer, like Apple's recent ad campaign tried to make us believe.
Thank you

Hahahaha X3 see we're running XP downstairs (family comp) ... I don't mind it, but when I have OS X up here, I don't see why I would go down there...
I loved 95->98 ... after that, things started to get wonky

It's funny you should say that, because, not just in my opinion, they actually started getting better when Windows XP was released.
For the longest time there was an entire line of OSs that was kept hidden from the public from Microsoft called Windows NT. Which was based on some DOS concepts but also has a few UNIX-like functionalities. They were only available for business class machines. While sharing similar interfaces with the DOS based (home version) Windows systems, they in fact didn't have any DOS components at all. Windows 2000 was the version that merged the Windows 98 interface with a Windows NT platform. Basically making it as user friendly as a Windows 98 machine but with much better stability. Windows XP was what finally brought that to the home market.
Long story short, Windows XP is a much better operating system than 98, and since it was built with a similar interface to 98, it's very easy to transition too.

Yeah... it's an older computer... but they're simple folks, they only really use it to go on the net and Word

But still, Windows XP, despite being an older OS is still up-to-date on almost every standard in the computer industry today. Which is really good being that it takes less system resources to actually run it, unlike the newer ones.
My gripe with Vista and 7, as you can see in that picture I pointed out, are binary compatible OSs. Meaning 7 was built on top of Vista and therefore amounts to nothing more than a simple update. But if Microsoft actually backported the fixes from 7 to Vista, they couldn't charge you something hundred dollars to upgrade. So people think they're buying a new OS and "getting away from Vista" when in reality it is Vista.

But even Linux isn't perfect, but I'll agree it is pretty stable seeing as it's built on the Unix structure. Thank you.

It just goes to show, no computer is above failing on you!
I do remember Apple trying to make their computer seem fail safe around the "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" ad war. But rather than them making themselves just look good, they had to make Microsoft look bad to look better.

NS-Games In reply to DT-Fox [2010-08-05 19:09:39 +0000 UTC]
That's exactly right. Just because it runs a Unix-like OS, doesn't make it the best computer ever built, or for that matter, doesn't give it a 1up on other PCs.
And with that comment I point you to this video [link] around 2:25 in. The whole point of that Ad campaign was to make Microsoft look bad in order to boost their sales, and make them look like a friendly company. In reality though Apple is just as bad, if not worse than Microsoft. I mean, they pretty much control everything when it comes down to buying their products. Which, as the courts just ruled against them, is a monopolistic behavior.

Just like the iPods, I always figured Macs were for folks who wanted a lot of consistency. Or just something fancy. But now that you mention it, anyone can simply make a program for PCs using free ware, while in order to make a program for a Mac, that would require purchasing a SDK, right?

I'm not sure about the software development portion of that. But when it comes to their hardware, that's where they get really picky. For instance, since 2005 all of their computers have been Intel based. Meaning they run on the same hardware any standard Windows based machine does. So why can't I run Mac OS X on any other computer of my choosing? Because if I did, they couldn't charge me $1,200 a machine.

Yeah, people's first reaction to a problem is usually to bang the keyboard.

I don't have anything against the Mac or Mac users, but I mean, it's just not a perfect machine like most people think it is. And, not to say I would flip out on you, but I'm getting a little tired of everyone telling me what a great machine it is.
Thank you.

You want to know what makes it even funnier? The other day I was sitting across from a Mac user who's laptop crashed twice while I was sitting next to her. I was sitting there with a Windows XP laptop that didn't crash once during that time.
But anyway, thanks again.
