Description
It's been a while from my last pose practice featuring my original character Sayaka Tsuchimiya. Since I just acquired a new Cintiq, I needed something to draw so that I could get used to using it. Thus I decided to make a new pose practice which is 13th in the series. Since Sayaka's strongest asset is probably her butt, I made a booty edition! The challenge was to draw each pose (or set) so that the butt would be visible in one way or another. It was an interesting challenge, for obvious reasons.
1. Sayaka eating some pocky. I figured that letting her wear some clothes and eat some sweets could possibly make her more cooperative.
2. She is rather cute when eating some chips isn't she?
3. Although more cooperative than before, she isn't especially happy about the focus on her butt
4. Her sister Sachiko came to spoil the fun. She is trying to help Sayaka to avoid eating too much junk food.
5. Sachiko won't let Sayaka go.
6. Sayaka gets annoyed and calls her sister a hypocrite while pointing her belly.
7. Hmmm...?
This pose practice was demanding but very fun to draw. I'm fairly satisfied how some of the poses turned out.

I like these characters alot. Β I enjoy the fact that you draw your women with simple, yet curvy designs. Β Lovely!

Drawing fine well-rounded booties from dynamic views is one of my main goals as a growing artist. I'll gladly use your sketches for reference!

When you do these studies, do you do them from reference? Or are you building them up yourself?

These are drawn from imagination. I rarely use references unless there is something special, like very advanced pose or type of clothing.

Any tips for achieving that? I can copy poses from reference okaishly but I struggle a lot with inventing them. When I do invent them I feel limited because it's simply based on what poses I've drawn. I've seen this pose practice you did where you would turn the pose from different angles and i'm assuming those are angles you haven't drawn from before. Β Did you just do a bunch of pose practice and eventually reached a point when you can construct them from imagination or is there some other process that you utilized?Β

Well, I've been drawing for years and I have memorized many poses by heart. However, the key in my ability to draw from imagination is my understanding about 3D and proportions. I construct bodies with simple forms and I can see the proportions in 3D, so it's just a matter of positioning those basic forms so that they form a human figure.
When I'm drawing a pose that I haven't drawn before, I rely on my understanding how the body ought to behave. If it's a difficult pose, I try doing it myself or take a look at several references and then draw it from my memory/imagination. So even when I'm using references, I never copy them. That has forced me to understand how the body works.

As for me i always try to copy some poses and draw it from a different point of view as a practice and train my understanding about anatomy and perspective, yet im not pretty good at it until now.
Yeah, sometime memory from previous drawing can help, yet i think basically its not imagining a new scene.
Creating a whole new scene from imagination itself seems kinda hard for me right now.
It seems i still need many much more practice to reach your level Β .
Β
I still not have a good dynamics of movement understanding yet.
It seems kinda complicated for me to generate a perfect pose as yours.
I really love your skill, i wish i could steal your anatomy and perspective understanding

I guess people have a bit false impression about "drawing from imagination". I would say drawing from imagination is about building a vast visual library in your mind, sort of a catalogue where you pick ideas for whatever you need.
I don't think it's possible to draw anything completely without relying on memories or references. For example, you can draw cars without references, but to draw convincing cars you need to understand how they work and look in general. Same goes with everything else. There are reasons why things look and work like they do, and drawing them convincingly requires capturing those key features so that the viewer will see and feel the subject.
If you haven't been drawing for long, then it's only natural not being able to draw very well at once. But the more you spend time on drawing, the better you will become. I wasn't especially good at drawing at first (your old sketches look better than mine did), but I started young and I've kept drawing for 12 years. One has to learn at least something in that time period . So even if you will probably fail for quite some time, know that each drawing will take you further.

Oh i see, that kinda make sense.
I got it, so i need to add more reference into my visual library in my mind by practicing more.
Having many experience from drawing various pose and position will certainly improve our understanding in anatomy and perspective. The more we practice, the better we know about our fault and at the same time we can make our art seems more convincingΒ
Thanks for your guidance, your art will be one of the most important reference which i use to improve my drawing skill Β

I really like how your characters have some real mass into them. I don't mean that they are like some of the cancerous pics DeviantArt has a lot of, but in a realistic way. Some people's characters don't seem realistic in that way. So, huge props! These have been a great help.
By the by, I faintly remember you making a sort of an age study type tutorial too, but I can't find it. Is it somewhere?

Well, you succeed.
Maybe you could edit the age study and remove the child one? I was looking for the lineup because I need to draw some differently aged women, and if I remember correctly, it was until 70 years of age or so. I don't think anything after 18 is against the TOS.
