Description Although I didn't intend this to be a tutorial, I think this explains how I view things pretty well.

Proportions and symmetry in space
Be it a cube or more complex object, I always look for proportions and symmetry, especially the latter. In order to do this, I need middle lines and points. Why? They are easiest to find because, well, they are always in the middle of two reference points/lines. That said, I can check whether the shape is symmetric and it's proportions are in place.

Plane sense
I don't really construct perspective with cumbersome guidelines, unless the subject is very complicated. I try to visualize in which directions individual planes are facing in order to understand the shape. I do this by reading the visual cues of the drawing. For example, by drawing crosses on the planes makes it much easier to understand the orientation of the plane.

Resolution
I don't usually draw human figure with rectangular shapes, but I still think perspective with cubes. It's just that I just skip the blocking phase and use smooth shapes instead. Basically, arcs just have many straight lines, so visualizing smooth planes is just about visualizing the rough blocky form in mind and drawing it smooth.

Contours and sections
Since I draw smooth shapes, contours work the best when I analyse the surface. I use contours pretty much the same way I would use middle lines, though I tend to add few extra arcs to mimic sharp edges of rectangular shapes. Thinking section cuts is great for analyzing the volume of the shapes. I usually do these with arms and legs, mostly for figuring their orientation in space.

Simplification
Complex shapes are much easier to draw if they are first simplified. With the torso for example, I would think a shape that corresponds the general feel of the torso. By knowing what directions the planes ought to face, it's easier to analyse what's wrong with the drawing.

In speaking about proportions and such, I am curious how you would go about fixing a picture where you know what area is wrong but you can not seem to fix it.Β

Nsio In reply to xXVVSOSVVXx [2018-03-28 04:24:26 +0000 UTC]

I would either draw it again from scratch, or acknowledge the errors and try doing better job in the future. It's possible that one is merely missing a key skill to fix the issue and that skill may come naturally in the future if one just keeps drawing and accumulating more experience.

You know that artist mannequin thingy you draw for female bodies, with all the spheres and shapes showing the different planes of the body? Could you draw a male version of that? I like the way you break down the shapes of the female body in tutorials like this, and want to see exactly how you do that with the male body. Since you've already explained the basics of the body and such in other tutorials (thanks for always being so in depth ), you don't have to/probably don't need to write a whole essay on how you did it, just show us how you would do it in a drawing or two.

You obviously don't have to, I just thought it would be a great help to those who need help learning male anatomy.

Thanks a ton for both the time you've taken to read this comment and the time you've take over the years make these wonderful tutorials to help us beginners.

Thank you for your appreciation .

I haven't drawn males or studied anatomy enough to make dedicated tutorial about them. But basically, it's just about applying the female body mannequin and figuring out which shapes to use to represent male body. Generally that means using more angular and boxy shapes for males and rounder and smoother shapes for females.

Besides, Scyra already has really good guides for drawing male and female bodies:
Β
His guides are about visual aids rather than actual anatomy, just like mine. However, his way to divide the body parts into sections is based more on muscle anatomy while my sections are more about general shapes or similar to action figures. That said, Sycra 's model is more useful in long run, making it easier to jump to real anatomy when the time comes. I suggest taking a look at his video guides which he has included in the descriptions to understand how to work with the mannequin and different body types.Β

I love Sycra! I can't believe I never found this before! Thanks for showing this to me! You really are quite a generous person.

One question (curiosity): when did you start drawing and why? Where exactly did you learn all this stuff?

I'm just saving efforts here xD. If there already is a good resource, there is no need for me to make a duplicate lol. Unless I can add something new into it, that is.

I started drawing around 2004 because I had poor internet connection and I wanted to draw hentai xD. Then I found that drawing is actually really fun and intriguing. On 2009 I realized how bad I was and that was the point where I started to accumulate my current understanding about drawing and art in general. I've used several resources, but mostly relied on my own observations on what works and what doesn't.

"Here is how you too can draw an unrealistic, overly-sexualized, pornographic female body while assuming that this is the way women should actually look!"Β

Ouch, a full frontal assault. Are you jelly or something?

That's rather unartistic and sad way of thinking... just ignore me and my examples and just take advantage of the concepts to improve as an artist.Β Even if my examples were unrealistic, overly-sexualized or evenΒ pornographic at times doesn't mean that these concepts couldn't be applied on realistic, non-sexual and non-pornographic figure drawing.

I do appreciate all the comments, be it praise or critique, but I'm not obliged to reply all of them. I do my best though. I have other life than just dA and being moderately popular takes its toll, so I need to be choosy. Does that make me a bad person? Maybe. Do I feel bad about it? No. I'm already being rather generous for making tutorials and other resources for free and literally writing essays for people who have asked for guidance.Β I have enough self-esteem not to fall on your attempts to make me feel bad for what I do or what I choose not to do . I'm well aware of my actions and their possible consequences and I don't need you to remind me of them, thank you. Go moralizing other popular artists since it appears to be worth of your time

Aeodin In reply to Nsio [2016-05-28 19:22:08 +0000 UTC]

Seriously, take two minutes to reply your countless loving comments-- or do you only spare your time for negative ones, and take for granted all the people who have shown you love? How immature is that?Β

If you're going to devote this much energy to being upset that someone dared dislike something you did, you'd think you should devote at least a fraction of that to the people who have given you the ego you've developed-- just imagine what your ego would be like without all those positive comments!Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nsio In reply to Aeodin [2016-05-28 21:10:06 +0000 UTC]

I'm afraid the one being upset here is you

Two minutes per a comment is practically a shallow "thx" reply, especially when the majority of the comments are simple "thx" comments. If I reply, I want to make it count and have conversations. So where I lack in quantity of replies, I make up for in quality. Of course, it's not possible to give such replies to all, but I believe the few that actually receive a reply are far more happier than if it was just a shallow "thx" reply. At least I would. Since I know how demanding it can be to reply every comment, I'm not expecting anyone to reply mine either. This is the reality and while we should do our best to make people happy, we also need to mind our own interests. It's naive to expect that if you give a comment, the others must reply to it.

On my early days I replied all comments I got as you suggested. But after doing honest research on myself, I noticed it was just attention seeking. Today I either want to save my efforts or truly engage those people Β who comment. Isn't that more wonderful than giving replies like a machine?

So why I devote so much energy to replying your comments? Because I like debates, comments with just praise hardly ever offer such opportunities. You probably haven't read all the negative comments that I have received over the years and in which I have replied, but in majority of them the initial hostility has changed into mutual understanding. These people don't necessarily agree with my points, but they have become great friends who have the guts to speak up their mind. I have learned a lot from those people about the female body and thanks to them I've been able to improve. The fraction of devotion you spoke of has definitely been great and educating, more than simple "thx" replies have ever been.

From that perspective negative comments have been more useful than the positive ones. As I said, I have strong self-esteem and I can deal with negative comments. Where would I be without all those positive comments? I would like to know!

But that aside, before you call me immature you probably should rethink your own approach about this matter. What do you expect to gain from your hostility?. You are lucky that I'm not falling into your hostile approach like many others do. On the contrary, I'm willing to have a good debate and I hope other deviants won't attack you for you hostility towards me. Take a deep breath and try again. Don't embarrass yourself in front of the whole world like many others have before you.

How I began thinking in 3D.Β

In October 2013 - I lost my job - and remained content with sitting at home - and cleaning out all my boxes of EVERYTHING.

I laid out everything I owned on the floor & began associating only 3 things.Β Β Β  Sizes, Shapes and Colors (and eventually added Function).Β Β

It took me 30 days to get my large mess - down to a manageable size.Β Β
However, I started having scientific epiphanies about 2 weeks into this exercise.Β Β Β

It would be wrong to not include at least some factors -

1.Β  30 days of artificially contrived affirmations mirrored to other people (who were not willing to give affirmations)
Again, this was mirrored through emails & backed - by the reward of not being arrested.)Β Β  This was my artificial, contrived, false reward structure.Β

Yes, I understand this is similar to Saddam Hussein's view of survival & winning - through the US not capturing him.Β

2.Β  Dumping out many, many differently sized objects - and mapping them in any way possible with adjacent objects.Β

The substrate was a 2D carpeted-floor with many smaller objects setting on it.Β

This was the visual interface & memory association structure - located in my apartment

3.Β  Don't stop doing it.Β Β  Don't let your mind rest - just keep associating - even in sleep - sizes, shapes, and colors.

4.Β  I was forced to look at all my known and predicted barriers & potential - including Prejudices - and eventually be willing to associate and understand how prejudices can also be used to tighten up scientific loose-ends - in my brain.

I did this under the assumption that there were more interesting things to discover in my lifetime - personally - by myself or with others (it didn't matter). .

5.Β  I ate mostly popcorn (1 cup un-popped) daily .Β
I drank mostly coffee (6 mugs medium roast per day).Β

I also ate smaller amounts of the following - several times per week.Β

a. hamburger (with cheese slice)

b. chicken breasts (with cheese slice)

b. carrots

c. 6 packets of Splenda daily (1 per cup of coffee)

d.Β  Peanut Butter sandwich (with 1 small glass of skim milk)

e.Β  12 Grain bread

f.Β  Liberal amounts of table salt & peppercorns (ground myself)

g. Liberal amounts of Italian Seasoning, garlic salt, garlic oil.

h.Β  Red pepper and paprika - mixed as a complex spice.Β

Trying to keep my brain "color neutral " is most difficult - when associating objects.Β Β  Sizes and Shape pattern-matching is easier.Β Β
I had 3 dozen similar mental events within the first 2 months.Β Β

Since then :::

I have built a magnetic mixer - to rediscover a chemistry education that I never wanted before (40 industrial chemicals currently being studied).Β
I have build a number of 3D antennas - with twisted-pair doorbell wire - to better understand string entanglement dynamics (part of string theory).Β
I am designing a magnetic propulsion method - using magnetrons and foil-covered lampshade cavities.Β
I am designing fractal-type objects for wireless transmission - using Propeller Chip Boards & software.Β

I feel I can come up with solutions much quicker now - even though I am not thinking faster.Β
