As a child, owning the take-along toy version of Culdee, I always wondered why there was a face on the back of the engine. Still a mystery for me.

Well on the Culdee Fell Railway, the line is incredibly steep and dangerous, and even with automatic brakes, the engines need to keep a good look-out. but because they have to push their trains up the mountain facing towards them, they can't see where they're going. that may be whey they have faces on their backs, so they can look ahead when they're rolling downhill
