My first "encounter" with dimentrodons was in that old cartoon series Dino Riders. They were like covert ops dinosaurs, the riders would be behind the sail and march a line of dimetrodons past the enemies who would think they were just a line of dinosaurs, and then they would spin around and SURPRISE!

I've always wondered if the fin would be able to handle what the Dino Riders attached to it and what it was used for in real life. Did they live in trees?

No they did not live in trees nor were they covert ops dinosaurs. They actually aren't even dinosaur but a synapsid (as "I can claim to be on the ancestral tree that lead to mammals and humans").

I do recall skimming another comment saying they were pre-dino and thus all those dinosaur books and cartoons got it wrong Synapsids seem to be interesting critters. I should find out more about them, see if I can extrapolate some vaguely convincing scientific basis behind having reptile Evolved XD

This particular synapsid is a pelycosaur. Another well known one in that group is Edaphosaurus.

Yeah, dimetrodon is a pretty awesome creature. I always found it interesting that it's often depicted with dinosaurs, even though by the time the dinosaurs show up, these guys were extincted. I really liked that show on Discovery which featured these guys.
