I’d choose the PRR J1 as my No.1 pick for resurrection

I can see why. It just has a very unique appearance to it. Plus, it is the one Pennsy locomotive that wasn't preserve, so I think a new build of one would be ideal in locomotive preservation.Β

I agree with you on the NYC Hudson and the L&N 2-8-4 Berkshire. If there's any locomotive I'd resurrect, it would have to be the A&WP 2-8-2 Mikado, because it looked totally modern back then. (It should have been more like a Berkshire in my opinion.) It's also because I love looking up steam tenders on the Railroad Picture Archives website and the Railway Preservation News forum, and I love thinking up scrapped steam locomotives to rebuild and match them up with their tenders.

I've seen some steam engine tenders re-used for steam generator and work cars, but I'm afraid most of them are scrapped, unfortunately.

Tell me about it. Having a new built NYC 4-6-4 Hudson be built and aΒ L&N 2-8-4 Berkshire would be revolutionary in locomotive preservation, considering that tenders of both locomotives have survived.

A A&WP 2-8-2 Mikado would be nice to see built. It would also help fill in a gap of locomotive preservation. Considering that the PRR T1 Trust is building a new T1 from the rails up and they have purchased the last surviving 16 wheeled coast to coast tender and plan to restore it to use it behind the new T1, I figure that if someone were to build a replica of a L&N 2-8-4, all they would have to do is build the engine, restore this tender to working order, couple it up to the engine and BOOM, a new L&N 2-8-4 is ready to go. The same thing can also apply to the NYC 4-6-4 as well as any other locomotive.Β

I have heard about that too. Some tenders were also saved to be used as auxiliary tenders as well as used with rotary snowplows. I believe there are some tenders from extinct locomotives that are still around. If anyone were to build a new model of the locomotive that the tender was once paired with, they can use one of the tenders and restore it to run with the new build engine.Β  I have made a picture that about the making of standard auxiliary tenders that should be constructed if any locomotive preservation trust society were to get any of the surviving tenders that are still in existence and in service.Β Standard auxiliary tenders Β
