She said she loved him one afternoon, when the sun was shining and clouds shifted comfortably through the sky. She said it like the cool breezes floating through leaves and car windows, like a soft caress that left a trail of goosebumps across your skin. She didn’t mean it, not really. It was just the temperature, the atmosphere of gentle sighing and easy-going smiles that put her into an illusion of affection and happiness. Like a round and colourful fruit that looks as though it would burst into juicy, flavourful pulp when you put it in your mouth, only to reveal a dry center when you sink your teeth inside it. A mirror of beautifully frosted glass under perfectly formed snowflakes that cracks and splits apart when you touch it.

They sat on his front porch together, in the cushy, little seat-swing, enjoying the intoxicating rays of sunlight beating down against their arms and legs, and mistaking the euphoria it induced for each other’s company. A butterfly flew past, and across the front lawn, but nobody noticed, except maybe the cat staring out the window next door.

It was not like he believed her, truly. But how can you reason with your heart, or your mind, when you are hearing one thing, and believing another?

So he smiled, and she didn’t see because her eyes were closed, and her hand safely tucked inside his, and he was only fooling himself.

Summer flowers bloomed, while others wilted, and imprinted only in false hopes, while he smiled, still, and drifted into the sky, leaving her behind.
