lets clear it up: my message through this tutorial is NOT "dont use Photoshop" but rather "start with SAI because Photoshop is indeed a very complex program, not meant for most beginners".
I don't hate Photoshop, instead, I do recognize it's a very good program that can be used to complete SAI's functions OR be used for the whole process without any other software.
If you start by working with SAI, learning is much more easy and fluid, and after a year and half using it and completing with Photoshop, I guess SAI could disapear from the face of earth, I would intuitivelly know how to work the basics of a full drawing with Photoshop already.
It then becomes a choice to keep using SAI or not, and I chose to stay with SAI for now.
I'm offering the easiest and most functional choice i know for beginers, so they can work with all the functions the pros have without having to costumize a whole program they are not even familiar with.
Feel free to suggest any other program as well, if you know something that works as easy and effective as SAI.
Man, this file needs to be redone!

I completely disagree with your image of Photoshop. Personally, I use Photoshop CS5 and I could never go down to Sai. I have used Sai, and while it is PERFECT for beginner to advanced artists, it simply does not do as much as Photoshop. Every single tool has an important function that can and should be utilized by professional/hobby artists. Taking the time to learn what each does and getting the most out of it takes time, but it is worth it.
It does not take three clicks to pick a color. A separate color picker can be attached to the ceiling or wall of the Photoshop station and hidden or shown at your discretion, as can all other windows. Also, Photoshop is the last word in customization. Don't downplay customization, as it can be very important. Same with layer types. I really suggest you give Photoshop more credit, because there is a reason it is so popular and often used by professional artists in a legitimate workspace.
Don't get me wrong - Sai is wonderful, and has its perks and peaks, and I suggest giving it a try. For beginners' sake, though, it is better to give each a complete and equal list of real pros and cons. Photoshop is worth so much more that its lens flare and its motion blur.

sai is for beginners like you said , sai is better for those who want to start doing tablet and computer made work and those who need good coloring
photoshop doesnt have 5 blur brushes, i think photoshop is for editing photots
and i agree with some of what you said

No, but you can create as many different blur brushes as you like as well as use any of the 10 different styles of blur command filters, each with endless combinations of customization effects.
Photoshop is useful in editing photos, but anyone who has ever used it would know that it is a complete art suite, complete with animation features, 3D functions and digital space vector and vexel components.
Don't argue against what you obviously haven't fully experienced.

but some people dont know how to make blur brushes therefore sai is more set up for coloring than Photoshop ,and i dont care what photoshop can do its harder to use than sai , it took me a week to figure out everything on sai and photoshop took me over 2months

Well, you can download here and there brushes for both programs, it's just that you can customize them a lot better on Photoshop (change spacing and jittering), but it's as you say, what's that worth to you if you don't understand how to do it?

But you can learn.
Think about it like this, for a second. You're playing Pong. Pong takes only a few seconds to figure out, and, while fun to play and very rewarding, Photoshop is like Guild Wars, Rift or WOW. A big, intense, complicated, collaborative MMO with quests and storylines and narrative. It may take longer to play, figure out, find your niche, etc, but it will be more emotionally rewarding in the long run.
(Now, I'm not saying you can't get what you get in Photoshop from SAI. Photoshop is just easier, imo, in the long run because when Sai falls short, you can do anything you could imagine in PS because of endless customization.)

Hey hey, I can use Photoshop a lot better now because I've learned the basics from SAI It's like going to mid school and skip directly to college - it IS possible but very hard and people just want to go step by step.
And I know a lot of BIG manga artists (those who are rich by now because of their art) who didn't feel the need of going to Photoshop.
It's a matter of preference, you can easily do things way easier and better on Photoshop, but if you just can't understand how it works, it's no use!

Oh, I do believe Photoshop can become very useful and has the ultimate customization functions (oh I do miss photoshop sometimes) but since I haven't been using digital art for more than a year, SAI still overcomes Photoshop on my stage of evolution:
First because of the line stabilizer (I still can't draw without it and I seriously hope that the next Photoshop edition adds this) and then because it's far too complex. I do know that complexity is good for efficiency, but for someone like me (and a number of people who start using digital art), whose photo editing knowledge was possibly limited to MSPaint before this, it simply takes longer to adapt to digital art.
But thank you very much for your feedback, and I didn't intent to look down on Photoshop in any way, in fact, I said it was far too complicated, which makes me the one who's failing in here. Apart from the line stabilizer and the overwhelming complexity, there is nothing wrong with it, but I really don't think it's suited for learning people, unless they already had some experience using this program.
It's already so much to learn and adapt to digital drawing, may we beginners have something to ease our tasks!

I agree with you here. While Photoshop is obviously an excellent and powerful piece of software, it's an image editing/manipulation program, not a digital painting program. SAI is more versatile and user-friendly when it comes to painting and artwork because this is what it's designed for. A lot of digital artists I know use SAI (or Painter) for the painting, and Photoshop/Gimp for preparing and editing scans, colour and image adjustments etc. It would be wrong to limit yourself to one program when there are others better suited to particular tasks.

Indeed! There are things photoshop can't replace on SAI, but the same happens oposite! There are even people who use 3D programs with photoshop and sai!
I guess it's a matter of adapting to what suits everyone best mostly

Not bad, and you are right is not easy to start digital art it takes training a lot of tons of patience (if you have just a mouse and paint)

Nuei In reply to PFSL [2012-03-30 21:07:33 +0000 UTC]
Even with a tablet, it's really hard to know what goes where, because people tend to do tutorials about how they draw and not about how to use the software. It requires patience and lots of studying to slowly unmask what is behind tutorials and other artist's techniques. And that is so boring
