I'm waiting 'til i can afford to do a shoot with it as i want to see what it's like "in situ".

Very nice work bud! Love the integration work and the weathering. Do you have any in color?

The reason for a pump action is that you don't have to reload all the way, the drum cartridge woud be a waste

It would be a semi-auto, but either way you'd have higher capacity for such a short weapon compared to it's equivilents as it's only 18" length with a max capacity for 3 rounds in the lower tube for emergency on manual pump.

That's my theoretical specs anyway.

SageofEyes In reply to NumptyMcPillock [2011-11-26 00:02:35 +0000 UTC]

...then why is there a pump for a semi-auto shotgun?

Backup when heavilly fouled & no time to clean it during combat and, as i said, for the internal reserve tube.

When the drum mag is engaged it'll engage the semi-auto system, but any probs then the pump will serve as a manual override. It's a back-up for the SA system, but also primary for the reserve tube. And you'll also be able to use it to select between the standard rounds in the drum to switching it to the specialist rounds in the tube, so you could hand pump hinge shots to open a door then instantly switch to SA to the drum of buckshot/flechette for room clearance.

Then why not just use the AA-12 which can do all that whith regular buckshot?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NumptyMcPillock In reply to SageofEyes [2011-11-27 18:10:02 +0000 UTC]

Probably 'cos this would be a handmade custom-build made to order far into a mythical cyberpunk/steampunk future when there will be no AA-12s around.

Yep I can see them trying to make something look cool rather than efficient and effective.

Good Gun talk.

You really seem to know your guns. I suck with drawing guns, mostly because I know very little about them. I hate to sound like a pest but I'd very much appreciate it if you could send me some information.

Also, very nice picture. Boththe design and the colors scheme are very well done.

Cheers mate.

I've been studying weapons & warfare since i was about 5-6. Mainly WW2.

The trick is to keep drawing them. Before long it becomes second nature.

What kind of info are you looking for? feel free to message me if you'd prefer.

Well, things like what kinds of weapons are tailored to scouting parties, what are advantages to different actions (pump, semi-auto, full-auto, etc.), and the basic anatmy of design.
I like to write and illustrate certian scenes. And if I want to write i like to be accurate.
Please respond again, and thank you for the earlier reply. Sorry it took so long to reciprocate, Im pretty new to DA.

That is the big question (and the most contentious)...Which is the best gun for the job?

Full auto is far superior to a 3 round burst mechanism. The British SA80 tends to have to be kept on full auto in desert conditions as it keeps jamming on semi-auto.

You also have the argument on does the scouting party all carry the same calibre weapons? Do they carry the same weapons & ammo as their adversaries? Do they have a mixture of calibres? Whatever is chosen there will need to be support weapons such as a SAW, GPMG, mortar, sniper rifle, LAWs...The firepower is chosen more as to the expected specifics of the mission, such as how deep is the incursion? How long the mission? Is it purely recon? Is it sabotage? Is it harrasment?...

The best way to study the anatomy of gun design is to find books (or probably online...I'm old so i learnt everything in books & hands-on experience) which have cutaway pictures showing the workings. I can't remember the name of the books but there's a BIG book from America updated every year which is virtually nothing except detail diagrams of firearms...Gun Digest if i remember correctly?

sorry to intrude on the conversation...

love this comment. I am (some sort of) a writer as well and the points you've brought up (same calibre weapons, support weapons, type of mission, etc) are worth a lot of consideration. Not that I've written much involving missions and guns, but it is good food for thought for the future

No worries. Feel free to join in

But to make matters more complicated the troops might just have to go out with what they've got, but chances are at least one of them will have a SAW type weapon & another will have a grenede launcher attached to his/her rifle. They'll probably have the sniper & mortar support from their base, maybe not if out of their range so have to take their own.

I'm not all that educated in the subject though

I'm thinking that the troops have more than one of each weapon in case the weapon wielder gets taken out? =o What is a SAW type weapon?

NumptyMcPillock In reply to agxposed [2011-12-27 09:24:47 +0000 UTC]

Don't worry...I'm a bit rusty on things nowadays as i'm not in the loop like i was years ago.

SAW(Squad Automatic Weapon)...Basically a smaller, lighter belt-fed machine gun which fires the same intermediate rounds of the rifles, rather than the big heavy rounds of the GPMG (General Purpose Machine Gun...Or known as a "GYMPY" in British military parlance). Google "Minimi" "ultimax" "negev" for box/belt-fed SAWs & "FN MAG" "MG3" for GPMGs 'cos then it'll help to put a picture to what i'm babbling on about

Generally troops are trained on various weapons before being tasked to a certain weapon, but keep refreshed on the other weapons for in case the operator get killed or injured. The only other personal weapons they carry might be a pistol & a bayonet. Though they will probably also be carrying flares, grenedes & maybe LAW's (fire & throw away rockets). Also, most rifles are capable of full-auto (though if i recall correctly the USA still persist with the 3 round burst mechanism) so the group will still be able to throw down a serious weight of fire.

I'll have to take your word on that 'cos i don't play computer games, but i agree that any shooter game should have a drum-fed pump-action shotgun

Who says something that can kill you cannot look beautiful at the same time. That is a beautiful piece of art the gun and the picture. The angle and the choice of it being black and white to me has a overtone that says "The gun doesn't care what color you are for it just lays their. When the user grabs it then the picture becomes blurry" Awesome picture

That's a hell of a eulogy. Cheers.

I agree tough, the gun does have a certain rugged, businesslike beauty to it.
