Here is an excerpt from a comic I am working on.
Shackled
Summary:
The Badlands. The land of lawlessness. A place that corrupts even the purist of hearts. Now it has its sights set on the element of honesty. Pulled into the land, Applejack must brave murderous gangs and insidious terrain without the support of her friends or family. All in order to get back something precious. AJ enlist the help of someone from her past only to realize that he is a shadow of the pony he used to be. It will take everything they have to not be swallowed by the darkness and fend off a mysterious disease that plagues the land.

To be fair, if she can kick down a tree, what does she need a gun for? (Apart from range, that is...)

As long as you keep reloading it, a gun will fire for longer than your legs can keep kicking.
Besides, with a gun, you can still fight, even if your legs are incapacitated, in any way.
And even an empty gun can be used as a club or crowbar of some sort.
All in all, the range is exactlythe first reason why she needs a gun.
And even the most muscular anthro pony mare can be taken down from a distance by one simple bullet in one critical place.
She needs the gun to even things out when at a distance.
