Description
Everyone really liked the original for this so I drew it again (because I thought the original SUCKED) xDOriginal was in 2009, new one is 2012.
You can see the full new one here: [link]
Maybe it's hard to tell here that the new one's better, but it is. I think so, anyway.
Meme base here: [link]
I had to edit it a bit since my drawing was long instead of tall. x3

Thank you!
I need to work on colors that are harmonized though or something, the colors in the new one are better, but they annoy me. x3

They're both amazing but I definitely see improvement. I love how you managed to keep the poses pretty much EXACTLY the same (except Axel's lower body) xD Someday I'll draw Axel's hair as well as you x3
What kind of brush are you using for lineart now?

Nyaasu In reply to Arcticwaters [2012-02-04 00:46:22 +0000 UTC]
Axel's lower body annoyed me badly, he looked broken in the original xD
AND AXEL'S HAIR
IS A BITCH.
Just the pencil, in Open Canvas -- I used to use paintbrush in Photoshop, and now I hate the way it looks. AUGH. xD

IT IS. SQUARE WHY YOU DO THIS TO US.
Oh, it's a different program. I was watching your livestream of Twilight Sparkle, and I was like "omg what brush acts like this? 0_0) x3

LOL Yeah, I love OpenCanvas. and it's cheaper than Photoshop, too (although I still need to use Photoshop to color) x3

xD Thank you.
I think I'm still color blind or something.
I can't chose nice colors to save my life. -_-

I meant more like the gradations of coloring look nicer than before.

Ah, yes, that I'll agree with. x3
But still, why can't I pick colors that go together nicely? D;

Would it be bad to butt in here? ;w;
I hope not because I think I will anyway~
Your colors are good in the way that they're exactly what the colors of the subjects are. This stops any confusion about what they really look like. In this case it seems to bother you that it's coming across as plain though. It works for realiztic pictures and ref sheets, but I agree this picture could use a bit of tweaking, color-wise.
This is the point where you choose a specialized palette. Because it's a sweet, comfy scene I'd probably go with the obvious pink. I think a soft, cheery yellow could work well too.
I think everyone does this differently, but even adding some colored filters over it might get you what you want. You could also try to choose "blindly", with the color theme in mind.
Like instead of a grey body, the Shepherd might have a dull shade of dark red, and the little yellow doggy might even be closer to a pale pink himself.
Definitely some advice you can take with a grain of salt, but it might be something to think about. C:
Anyway, I do like your work! It's very sweet.

xD That's how I feel other people color their art, and I have NEVER been good at choosing colors, even at my job. x3 Eventually, my boss pretty much just took all my designs (I designed plush) and colored them himself, because despite all his nudges for me to get better at choosing colors, I never could. xD It's a concept I don't really...understand, somehow.
So, that's one reason I admire other artists, I don't know HOW they chose colors, and since as a kid I only ever drew lines, I don't even have the "stepping stones" of getting into coloring properly. x3
So while I appreciate critique on the color, I don't often understand how to apply it, the same way I would understand critique on pose, or lineart. So I appreciate it, I do, I don't need to take it with a grain of salt, but I just don't have the framework to even understand how to apply it. x3
A few years ago, though, I didn't understand how to apply a lot of the crits I was getting on pose, either, but then one day ALL OF IT CLICKED, so I'm sure even if I can't understand it now, one day I'll have that moment of clarity, and it'll all fall together. x3
So, thank you, in advance. x3 I will try to think about custom pallets...even if right now the concept completely baffles me. xD

I totally get you. I have no real idea how to make artsy fartsy palettes myself, even though they can look -amazing-. ;w;
If you want to mess around a bit, one thing you could do is to take the base colors from something you like and make a painting off of that.
Another thing you can do is choose a selection of colors and just experiment with those. This meme is a good example of that!- [link]
Though these are just a couple little ideas, of course. x3 Sometimes you just have to be ready to learn something. I STILL haven't studied proper muscle structure yet and I've had that on my list for years~ >___>

D: That example is AMAZING, I want to try that, thank you for showing it to me!!
x3 I don't understand muscle structure either, and I took a class on it. xD Bones I get -- muscles not very well. xD So I'll admit, I just kinda..guess. x3

It's not that hard. Just ask yourself "Would a hippy wear these colors?" and if the answer is Yes, don't use that combination.
Though if you want color advice, I'd be glad to help you out when you need it.

And if I'm in a situation where I think I can ask you for help, I will, although since I mostly cheat to color (through filters), it's kind of hard to ask for help. x3
