Everyone really liked the original for this so I drew it again (because I thought the original SUCKED) xDOriginal was in 2009, new one is 2012.

Without the gradient (bottom one), from the top down, would be better >.<, maybe if you had it higher, less low..

Awwh, I love the improvement, but silly Nya, they can't sleep in Castle Oblivion...or is that the meeting room with the mega-high chairs? XD the room is too bright...but then again, some dogs can sleep through anything.

The overall improvement is undeniable, but I think I like your previous style better. I love the more cartoon look of it. x3

Although the forms are more solid in the second one, I agree that the overwhelming lighting distracts from the overall composition. I get the "dreamy" quality that you are going for, but I feel like it 's not soft enough for the rest of the image. I think it would be better if you focused the light source behind the bulk of Axel's body, instead of hovering over his mane. The light feels really intense while the images of the sleeping doggies feels really soft and sweet, together it sort of muddies the concept.
But the second still shows improvement, particularly in the subtly of line quality.

Oh, I guess I should have pointed out, I wanted to change the environment to be a nap during a bright day, in one of those white Organization castle rooms. x3 That's why the lighting is so different. Is it still too bright/distracting if you know this? x3

Naw I do recognize the lighting, I just personally want it to be softer to match the mood I get from the picture. It's good obviously I'm just offering a little constructive criticism since you seemed a bit unsure of if this one was better than the original; it is and that's the only thing I spotted that seemed off.

Okay. That's fine, I need criticism, because I think I'm not very good at coloring, or something, my coloring is always what bothers me. The drawings themselves I think are pretty good, if I do say so myself, but I am never COMPLETELY satisfied with the coloring. And lighting is a big part of that, so if you have suggestions, I definitely want to hear them. x3
For some reason, I was avoiding the darker colors this time, but next time I get a chance, I'll see how it looks with a more night-time color scheme.

Well one thing I've noticed about your shading is how light and soft it is. You never try to push contrast or really mix the colors up. I know we are talking about cartoons here, but I don't feel that you experiment enough with colors, shading, and style. I would like to see you try totally new ways of coloring your line work, which is always exemplary. I would also love to see you try something without lines! Art is all about getting your hands dirty and experimenting, don't be afraid to try new things!
That is my honest assessment of what you could do to improve your work. I love your art but I want to see you experiment more.

I've thought about all of these things recently, but I have to go back to commissions soon, and I don't like to experiment on things people pay for. x3
Someday I'll have a job that pays me enough where I can think of art as a hobby instead of my only way to get money -- and then I'm sure I'll try new things, since I don't have to be "stable". x3

So it's a vicious cycle- if you don't expand your art, you won't get as many consumers, but your afraid that if you make changes you'll lose consumers.
Well on any art that you don't make for profit, experiment! Heck, if you experiment a little bit on commissions they might not notice, or even like what you try.

Actually one thing I've wanted to try lately is lineless or minimal lines, and I had a plan to draw something that way, but art for an upcoming con and commissions got in the way. x3 But I am planning on trying it sometime.
I experiment in TINY ways on commissions, of course, but nothing radical. xD

YES try it! Just go crazy! If it doesn't work out, then you learned something and that's more valuable than if you had an easy success. I know you depend on these things for money, but you have more than enough talent to merit the risk of trying new things.

To me it looks like in the first one they're actually sleeping, in the redo it appears as if they closed their eyes for the pose and then they're going to open their eyes again after a picture is taken. And the white light seems to subtract from the overall picture in the redo. I liked the original the most.

Oh oh I understand the light now, it served your purpose well in that thought haha it reminds me of the white room in KH2 where you first find the drawings.
Maybe it's just me lol, I just thought they looked "too" relaxed in the second one but hey, it could be a very nice warm day, I could understand being super relaxed then
