Wow this is great. I know this is a bit much to ask considering I don't know you but I need to learn how to do this for a game I am helping create. Could you maybe point me in the right direction on how to go about starting to create these sort of things?

Alright! Here is some advice I can give you I always do spriting though a process called Silhouetting. You jsut draw out the frames as a silhouette like this: i41.tinypic.com/1174uud.png as you can see to the left of it, that just a filled in sihouette to look like my character. Actual Spriting is basically based on how I paint so you can come up with your own technique as well
Animating it is a whole different story becuase you need to know squash and stretch as well as the rest of the 12 principles of animation. In a game, however, you have to limit the animation to make it choppy and quick, that way, no matter the amount of enemies you have on screen, the game will not lag. So that is why my animations are mostly 4-8 frames tops.
Basically, I just studied sprites previously made by artists at Capcom, SEGA, and even Gamefreak/Nintendo. Always look to professionals when you are in doubt and I hope this helps you

Wow thanks for the fantastic reply. This helps quite a bit because I had no idea about Silhouetting. I am defiantly going to be researching that and all of the Professionals. I'm also going to still to that 4-8 frame rule. I'm sure I can search up on the squash and stretch techniques too. Anyway thanks a lot for the help and the image Means a lot.

Very smooth animation, the extra frame to show the stretch of the arm really helps make the character look a lil' flexible, and helps with the recoil effect : )

The beginning pose itself is the frame that makes the attack look strong. Straight back, fists forward, feet apart. : D Research, yeah!
