Description Basically, British Japan.
I can't really think, but the main PoD is that Commodore Matthew Perry of the Royal Navy (this is tied to the Columbia AU I posted earlier) sweet-talks Japan into submitting itself to the British. The Emperor stays, but as co-monarch alongside the existing monarch of Britain. Other PoDs include the Dutch holding on to Nagasaki for much longer and the Brits successfully annexing Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands from Russia, as well as the fallout of the Arduous March ending in the reconciliation and unification of the two Koreas and for China, either the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests ending in success or the 571 coup happening and turning out to be a KMT-led putsch backed by the British Commonwealth.

Changes to Japan include:
  • Japanese culture slightly conforms more to Western, specifically British standards. Japanese enjoy British etiquette standards, such as politeness, queueing, and good sportsmanship.
  • Cricket takes baseball's place as the dominant sport in Japan.
  • Christianity is more widespread, but is especially dominant in Kyushu, Sakhalin, and Kyoto.
  • English and Japanese are co-official ITTL.
    • Russian is a co-official language in Ezo, Sakhalin and Kurilia, as are Dutch and Chinese in Kyushu.
    • Indigenous languages are given recognition too, such as Ainu in Ezo, Ryukyuan languages in...Ryukyu, and Matagi Pidgin in Azuma.
    • The Japanese often speak Japanglish, which is basically Bonin English but more based on British than American/Columbian English.
  • The Emperor is still the Emperor de jure, but King Charles III is the de facto monarch.
  • The capital is in Osaka, but Tokyo (now Edo Town) is still the largest city.
  • No Japanese expansionism in WW2, with Thailand instead taking up Japan's mantle from IOTL and going beast mode on the Asian continent with the Philippines having to help the rest of the Commonwealth stop them. Also, Bangkok and Chiang Mai take the fall for Hiroshima and Dejima (Nagasaki IOTL).
  • Although minor, the Kobayashis from GoAnimate never exist.

But not everything has to change. Such as:

  • Anime still exists, it's just more influenced by Western cartoons. Some of the most famous include:
    • Rocket Kid (called Astro Boy IOTL);
    • The Adventures of Son Goku (Dragon Ball);
    • The Joestar Legacy (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure);
    • 3700 Years Later (Dr. Stone), and;
    • Meowbot (Doraemon).
  • Japan still has a major video game reputation, and such games known far and wide across the Commonwealth are as follows, including but not limited to:
    • Mario and Luigi (it's obvious what the IOTL equivalent is);
    • Sonic the Hedgehog;
    • Animal Town (Animal Crossing);
    • Magic and Science (Final Fantasy), and last but not least;
    • Video Game All-Star Battle Royale (Super Smash Bros.)
  • Washoku (native cuisine) remains relatively unchanged. Yoshoku (Western-influenced cuisine) has more British influences.
  • The Tokyo Olympics are still held there in 2021 (or 2020, assuming COVID never goes pandemic due to China being more competent than IOTL).
  • GoAnimators still use Japan as a penal colony for the people they consider Troublemakers, although there are little videos being made about their escape. (Is it just me or am I trying to please a community of immature child abuse-enabling monsters?)
  • Shinzo Abe still gets assassinated for his ties to the Moonies (Unification Church).

More PoDs and "in spite of a nail" moments to come.
