Description
Another of the illustrious giants that reside in the anteroom of the ninth circle of hell is the giant Ephialtes. Son of Gaea and Uranus, he took part in the Gigantomachy, the rebellion against the gods, which ended with the subsequent defeat of the giants. Dante places him in hell, completely immobilized by chains and half buried, unable to commit the same damage that he has done in life. He was killed by Heracles and Apollo, who shot arrows into his eyes.

"—Ese soberbio quiso ensayar su poder contra el sumo Júpiter—dijo mi Guía—, por lo cual tiene la pena que ha merecido. Llámase Efialto, y dió muestras de audacia cuando los gigantes causaron miedo a los Dioses: los brazos que tanto movió entonces, no los moverá ya jamás."
