Nyoun — Making realistic Lighting

Description Project done my Junior year of college.
Using just Maya, we had to make a scene look as close as we can get to a photo.
Modelling is done using polygons and lights are just through Maya, no compositing.
Although I am quite familiar with using Shake (compositing software)
it was forbidden for this project.

It's very nice, though I can see some noticeable differences. What did you render with?

Your drapes are a little too uniform compared to the photo, as well as the lighting doesn't hit it at the same angle, it's close... but not on target.

Good job though .

Everything's rendered in Maya, with minor compositing in Shake.
Thanks for the crit. I'm not a pro lighter and my intention wasn't to exactly duplicate the image, but to mimic and study realistic lighting.

I checked out your work, you might want to read up on '3 point lighting' 'diffuse lighting' and 'diffuse shadows'.
Mental ray is no good if you can't bring the environment up to par with its realistic quality.

Thanks, I'll check up on some of those things.

I've only just started 3D 7 months ago in my senior year of high school. I hope to become very good one day.

I'm actually doing a composite project this final quarter for the Advanced 3D class at my school.

Looking good, mental ray I assume? Great comparison, it's dead on!

Actually no mental ray. It was one of the restriction requirements for the project. Everything straight out of Maya lighting. I try to avoid Mental ray since they take forever to render lol.

(grins!) Other way around, it's just much more intensive to optimize mental ray. But the fact that you did this without GI or FG is simply AMAZING! Very impressive Maya software render, my friend... Keep at it!

Thank you very much. I'm not a lighter so it was agonizing pain to do it lol.. But after I got to animate a character in the scene so that was fun

You could have given a decay on the shadows, no?

Beside that, just friggin awesome o_o
I'm jealous.

Thanks~!!
Haha you are dead on. Ther's hardly any decay on the shadows.
Yeh. It was just to get by.. I'm wanted to get this project done asap, because we had limited time to fnish this scene and
animate one of my characters in that scene. More time on lighting meant less time on animation.
So I wanted more time to animates. Hopefully I'll be able to upload those animations sometime on DA too.

Oh sorry.. haha
But no, there are no photos... Everything is modelled, textured and rendered.
I'm very flattered.
Since you don't speak English too well, your comments are much more appreciated
thanks for checking them out.
