Ernst Stuhlinger's 1957 ion-drive spacecraft from Disney's "Mars and Beyond" segment of Tomorrowland.Ship was modeled in Blender 3D using blueprints from the Spaceship Handbook by Hagerty. Image of Mars is from NASA.

Drell-7, that's the thing about the umbrella ship. Old-timers like me who saw the Disney episode found that the ship stuck in their mind. It is so weird and unlike any other spacecraft, so it is quite memorable.
I found it fun to research why it is designed as it is, and see the logic behind it. Quite clever actually.

Now there's a REAL spacecraft--odd, but with its own strange kind of elegance-and best of all, it would really work!
