Description My Adventures in Studio continues....

Day 6...[I think, I dunno I lost count...sounds good. ]

I found a light set that I had bought for Studio a few years back when it was on sale, and I was in the process of gathering items that went on PA sale that would help me tinker and play with Studio when I was gathering up the courage to give it a try and DAZ offered the program for a limited time free item....so it's been collecting a little dust.

Getting a little better with it, this image took about 2.5 hours to render. I like the simplicity of DoF in Studio, in Poser it just didn't seem to work right for some reason. I didn't have to do much in Studio, just flip a switch technically.

I had problems finding the eyelid controls, I spent a while looking around and got lost in various parameter folders, never did find them and finally gave up and went with a preset expression. That is one thing I can't stand, and that is the bug eye zombie stare the figures have and most forget to adjust the eyelids to eliminate that.

I think I'm about half tempted to throw out all of Valea's hair items, they either look like helmets or have large/wide chunky bits that kind of look like the hair is too greasy and has been combed back in segments. Since I can't paint my own hair to save my life, I'm going to have to figure out what hair models will work properly in Studio.

The model is of my own creation. She was suppose to have pointy ears...but since the auto fit took charge of the M5 hair item I used, it made her have hairy pointy ears and I can't figure out yet how to turn AF off for the hair. Or add my own morphs to the hair for elf ears....so she's got slightly pointy ears.

Is there a way to render over black? I came across the background section during one of my lost adventures in Studio in Day 2 or 3 and haven't seen it since.

Thanks for stopping by and taking a look!

If you figured out DoF then I will have to upgrade to see how it works. In the older 2.3 it's such a pain.

There should be dials to adjust the expression on the head of the model. Just work through the body-bones until you reach the head and then check the Parameters. (Which is one of the Tabs you can pull out. I use it to do all sorts of things like adjusting poses and stuff.)

Well, all I've found right now is an on and off button for it. I haven't gotten that savvy with it yet to know if I can adjust the depth, which I'm sure there is. But I really like the DoF in Studio than Poser. Poser just chokes on it and creates this horrible crosshatch like design over the blurred area, and I'm sure it is probably my fault not adjusting it, but in Studio there it is, done, and renders much faster. Makes me do the Snoopy happy dance.

I've found the dials, when I did these first renders they were right out of the box so to speak, and first time I had ventured into the program, so I was blind as a bat and couldn't find anything and everything was different than the way I know in Poser, so it's all a learning curve.

You have 2.3 version, and I haven't seen the UI for that, but in this version 4.6, there are two sides of the screen taken up with 'tabs' for stuff. I don't like it when I add a new item into the scene, it is not automatically selected, which has caused me to screw up a few times in moving. So I have to go to the Parameters drop down and select the item I want to mess with. Clicking on it doesn't change the target for me.

The 4.6 UI has on the left side a menu strip for Smart Content, Shaping, Surface [color] and on the right side there is Scene, Parameters, Content Library, and Tool Settings.

Under Menu box in the upper right corner, I have DAZ Studio Format, Poser Formats, Other Import Formats, Products, and Categories. So I'm constantly flipping back and forth trying to find my stuff that is scattered under one of those main categories, which then splinters into many other folders under those 'tabs' so when I first tried Studio I was ready to tear my hair out, I'm sure there is a way to consolidate those folders and create my own directory, but I don't know enough about the folder structures to go in there and start moving stuff around. Mainly because even on my computer, there is DAZ Studio stuff all over the place, I think there are 5 areas on my computer that has DAZ Studio stuff, Public Folders, Program folders...

Now, unloading new stuff via a zip....again falls back on me not knowing the folder structures to confidently unzip stuff from other sites into Studio. Poser, not a problem, Those folders are labeled pretty straight forward. Studio not so much.

The UI for 2.3 is similar but different to what you described. Actually they changed it from what I was used to with 1.6 and I spent a bit of time doing some searching to figure out how to reset it to what I was familiar with again, so I can imagine getting used to two completely different layouts would be confusing. Many of those tabs on the sides can be moved around if it works like in the older versions, but I've found that keeping the two sides going works best for some things. You get used to how it all works though with practice.

I honestly have no clue how the folder structure works inside the new DAZ either. I usually unzip new stuff into a blank folder so I can see what all came out of the zip, and then manually move it into the Runtime folder inside studio. The older versions of DAZ would create a Runtime folder inside the Contents folder that you could install all Poser-based products into and they'd divvy up pretty much the way you described Poser's folder structure. I've gotten so used to digging around inside the Poser Runtime directory that I never remember to check the Contents directory - for instance I almost never remember to check the DAZ textures, the Poser ones generally work fine even if they lose a bit in translation and need some adjusting - to me that's part of the fun. 3.0 was set up to absorb the older studio's Contents easily without modifying it. I'm not sure how or what the new IM does.

I do not like their camera system. They have a tiny line of icons in the upper right corner of the screen. They resemble Zbrush set up actually, but you click the eyeglass and drag the cursor up or down to zoom in and out. Then hover over another icon to pan around the figure, or move another icon to go up and down. Is there a way to preset cameras? I really miss my Poser camera hot keys, Face camera especially. I can flit around with the cameras without farking up my rendering camera settings...in Studio not the case.

The new folders are coming out with My Library subfolder and a Runtime subfolder. My Library for Studio users and Runtime for the Poser peeps. In Studio there is a menu under Runtime that has the Poser file structure. I suppose this is really for people using the DSON but I'm not, I don't want to start using Poser for Studio stuff, I've been VERY tempted but no.

I think DAZ has allowed merchants to create the folders inside Studio, as in when they wrap up an item, they either make a My Library folder or a My DAZ3D Library folder etc. So it creates the splintered folders in Studio. I'm sure I can consolidate my Studio folders into a neat tidy one. But it took me a few years to do it for Poser. I had to break down the Poser folders as my runtime is huge. I had to create a folder for Hair, Clothing, Characters, Shoes etc, because I couldn't find anything. Back again to the way merchants label their stuff, some use the name of the product, others use their name, and some use something completely freaking different. I saw a post from Zev who ranted about the same thing.

There should be a way to get into perspective view where you can load a camera to use your current view position. There used to be a tab in the directory to import a camera set, just as for the light sets those might be hidden from you though until you load your Poser Runtime into DAZ since most of the ones I have were made for Poser. You should be able to create a few camera presets yourself and save them, though you'd have to do a little research on how to do that.

Yeah, one of the fun entertainments of using products from various merchants is figuring out THEIR convoluted system for folder organization and then deconstructing it for your own organization. When I first loaded DAZ I ended up completely destroying my folders by trying to organize them ALL in a way that made more sense to me. Except that some of those folders cannot be man-handled in this way and still work in any way, shape, or form.

I think I mentioned that I might be less than helpful since I am still using a severely outdated product.

I'll try to convince myself to load the new 4.6 Pro and see what sort of mess it makes so I can offer some more useful advice. There's a DAZ group here on DA - dazclub.deviantart.com/ - they probably can give you better advice than I can though.

DM are pretty good at giving you camera settings with their props packages. But that's all the cameras I've found. I had the camera the way I wanted it and there are 2 ways to render, through the render icon and another one in the drop down for render. If you use the render icon the camera will suddenly change. So to render as you have it, I have to go into the "render" drop down and go from there. Slightly annoying, as there has to be a way to fix that or I'm doing something wrong.

I wish the icons for the camera were bigger. Poser has a neat set up, with a big ball in the center. this allows you to move around the figure with your camera, the only one you couldn't use it for was the direct cameras, Left/Right Top/Bottom etc. But Face, Main, Pose, Hand and Aux you can move around...I don't mind the layout Studio has, but wish the icons were a little bigger or have little more space between. Maybe even a button that you click on so you know that's the camera control you have selected or something. I always feel like I'm going to click on another camera icon and screw stuff up.

The only way I usually learn how to use a program is to use it. Trial and error and when I hit a snag I go to the forums and search for clues. Some of the search features drive me crazy, like at Rosity, if you search for something in their forums, say skin textures. It will pull up pages of it, and it's like 90% of what it pulls up are off the original thread which is about skin textures, so you have to surf and wade through all the entries instead of making it show up with the heading and all the other threads tied to that are hanging down off the main thread...would make looking for stuff so much easier.

I don't think DAZ has any automatic camera packages, just the default front one (and I'm not sure if that one exists in 4.6). But the sets from other packages like your DM ones should show up once you decide to risk your Poser Runtime.

I am installing items that are Studio friendly, so I don't need to have Studio tinkering around in my Poser Runtime. I'm going to need 2 computers at the rate I'm going, heck, 3...one for Poser, one for Studio and one for gaming.

I guess that makes sense, even if it means a lot of extra work installing things twice. I have two comps. A dual core I use for most of my internet stuff and gaming, and a quad core that I use for rendering.

Oh yeah, the hair models should have Parameter dials too to adjust the pose. I should shut my mouth since I'm using the old 2.3 Ds and they probably changed EVERYTHING on me.)

I am a texture whore, I pour over the textures on every model that goes into a scene, including the hair models. If the color or shine of somethings looking odd you can usually adjust it in the Surfaces tab.
