You can say no in Golden Sun. When the Great Healer asks if you want to take the mission, you can say no. He will ask if you are sure, and if you say yes, it results in a message that says something along the lines of "and so weyard slowly slipped into darkness"
That is not the exact quote. It's similar though. If you say this though, you're taken back to where you last saved, so save before you get to this scene.
