History: - Teris learned the hard way that when you make a deal with supernatural forces you’d better be pretty specific because “I wish to walk among the humans” leaves a lot of room to interpretation.

The runt among the proud, militant Atlanteans, Terris never quite fit in with his kind. As a race that places great emphasis on personal contribution to their society, the small daydreamer could never serve as a soldier and was nowhere near the intellectual standard of Atlantean’s great minds, Terris scraped by by working for his uncle collecting materials to rework into Atlantean use.

Enter Terris’ fascination with humans. While most metals and stones Atlanteans use can be found raw and within easy access, it was discovered human ships often carry useful materials that could not be found beneath the waves. Tales of mermaids luring sailors to their deaths were inspired by bait-and-trap tactics Atlanteans used. Many Atlantean females used their beauty and siren song to lure ships into dangerous waters, where small warrior groups then began to tear apart the ship or push into into underground reefs. The job done, these groups would then retreat and leave the ship sink. It was Terris’ job to return and scavenge what he could from the ship afterwards, picking up what could be of use to his people.

Growing more and more curious, Terris began collecting odd items that had no use to Atlanteans, keeping them and absorbing what he could about the curious land dwellers. He became fond of human culture and even began wondering what it would be like to walk on land and see the things he’d only glimpsed on soggy pages of books. (There might have even been a song or two about being a part of other people's world.)

It was a lie that then led to Terris’ exile. When his uncle found his collection, Terris claimed to be inspired by the old junk smith, saying he was trying to see if he could come up with new uses for things Atlanteans had not thought to use before. Pride that his nephew was finally making something of himself, Terris’ uncle began to brag about Terris’ work.

Realizing he had nothing to show for his lie and unwilling to face his uncle in light of the truth as a collector of human trinkets, Terris secretly left his home, leaving it all behind. Terris then wandered for years, scavenging what he could and trading with other Atlantean tribes, never settling down.

A storm forced him close to shore one terrible night, but it was by chance the Midnight Circus had set up near a delta, allowing Terris to swim inland to get a closer look. But was it chance or fate that led the ringmaster to walk along the beach, noticing a curious Atlantean eyeing him with wide eyes and awe.

Personality: - Terris is, for the most part, friendly. What he lacks in physical strength, he makes up for in determinism and sarcastic wit (which has often landed him in even more trouble). Due to the abuse he suffered often, he’s learned to laugh at himself and sling insults back, rather than get mad. Actual anger is rare for Terris because he prefers the phrase “water on a seagull’s back.”

However, he still holds a healthy dose of wide-eyed curiosity and has a terrible habit of ignoring his own safety in order to sate it. Due to his time scavenging, Terris has a keen eye for anything that still has use in it, but this has manifested itself in a near hoard-like behavior as he collects just about anything he find even remotely interesting. He's often accidentally "collected" other people's belongings, as well.

His wish didn’t quite pan out like he thought it would, but Terris can’t deny that he enjoys the attention he’s receiving by being part of the freakshow. As someone often looked upon with disdain or outright ignored, he found he enjoys being stared at in awe.

Likes: - Raw meat (no fire underwater), books with pictures (he can’t read), swimming, trinkets and jewelry, scarves
Dislikes: - Dry heat/fire, harpoons/fishing nets (lingering fear and past experiences with not-quite-dead-yet sailors), dogs (after an unpleasant run in with one called "Charlie" he now refers to them all as charlies), shoes

Terris wears a damp/wet scarf around his head to protect his gills (as Atlanteans do not possess operculums) from drying out or getting dust in them since they're rather sensitive to his new, drier environment. He can still breathe underwater but doesn't need to anymore.

Atlanteans are natural musicians--able to sense pitch and vibrations with unusual accuracy. While Terris was never a good singer, he is quite good at playing most stringed instruments.

While similar to a human's skeleton, Atlanteans' bodies have a lot more cartilage in their body than bone. This makes them rather light and very flexible.

Terris' head extension is actually an evolved dorsal fin common to Atlanteans. While it's original use was to prevent rolling and assist with sharp stops and turns, it has become more of a radar as it can easily pick up changes in vibration in the water--often used to detect changes in current or locate predators nearby (while considered one of the more intelligent species in the deep blue, Atlanteans aren't at the top of the food chain)

- Atlanteans are actually a very tactile race. Almost like eels, they have a low current of electricity running through their body, but nowhere near strong enough to be deadly. This low current often reflects their mindset or emotions, often pulsing rapidly or sluggishly depending on their state of mind. Oftentimes, when two Atlanteans are in disagreement or there is a miscommunication, they will often grab hands or touch one another to dispel any misunderstanding of intent. Thus, when confused Terris becomes very handsy out of social habit.
