HISTORY
Jess was born to a pair of too young, too broken drug junkies straddling the poverty line in Brooklyn, New York. His childhood was riddled with yelling matches, insincere apologies and overdosages, one that finally claimed his father’s life when Jess was eight. When his already haphazard home life lost what little stability it had, they packed up and left to live with his grandparents. His mother gave birth to Eva not long after and he quickly took to being a protective older brother.
When he was ten, while wandering around avoiding going home too early, Jess was called over by a man who owned a mechanics and junkyard shop. The man, Seb Boswell, offered to pay Jess if he helped him load in the new inventory. From then on, Jess would circle around the shop, aptly named Seb’s, offering a hand regardless if he was paid or not. Seb took a shine to Jess, having found him a sharp kid.
Perhaps a little too sharp, as it wasn’t long before Jess found out Seb’s doubled as a chop shop. Most, if not all the merchandise within Seb’s were of stolen cars, not only that, but it also served as a meet up spot for Seb’s more lucrative dealings, such as bank heists. Seb was surprised, however, to find out Jess kept his mouth shut about the matter and had at one point completely discarded evidence that pointed a finger directly at Seb regarding several stolen car parts. Impressed, Seb took Jess under his wing, showing him the ways of the sleight-of-hand.
The years came and went. Jess eventually dropped out of high school freshman year, his mother had run off with another man a little prior, and Eva was sent away to other relatives. That last bit burned, but Jess conceded with the hope Eva would find a better life outside what he could have possibly offered her. His prime interest became Seb’s and the activities that transpired within it. He helped work as a clerk to Seb during the day, a right hand man when it came to shady merchandise dealings, but most of all, Seb’s best auto thief. Jess grew into his early twenties a successful con man.
Things wouldn’t be flipped onto its head until, after an already well-paid car theft well done, Jess decided one more bonus couldn’t hurt and he sent his sights on a vehicle left for the taking. What ensued was a car chase throughout Gotham by the city’s very own Batman. Unbeknownst to Jess, the car he had stolen belonged to the Joker and had been pinned down by a tracker. Jess was finally cornered and taken to jail, but he would never get the chance of a trial.
The Joker hadn’t taken the idea of a simple hustler stealing something from him too kindly and had sent his Stooges to break him out of his cell. Fully intending to kill Jess and use him as an example for any other poor soul, Jess was taken to Ace Chemicals where he was to be thrown in one of the vats. He managed to squirm his way out of his captors’ grip (but not before narrowly falling into a vat anyway, his fingers would become “perma-clowned” due to this), regardless, he didn’t make it out of the plant. He did, however, with frantic pleading and promises to work for the Joker, managed to amuse the Joker enough for him to completely scrap his plan of killing him.
He did watch the entire chase on live television after all, and he couldn’t help but notice Jess’ skill behind the wheel. So for the time being, as long as Jess kept himself useful (or at the very least entertaining), he was to be the Joker gang’s brand spankin’ new errand boy. The window of opportunity was narrow, Jess realized, but it was an open one nonetheless. Not one to throw away chances, he jumped headfirst into the gig, adopting the mantle of the clown henchmen, Jester.
Well aware of the doomsday clock ticking over his head, Jester did whatever he could to keep himself in good graces (as good of graces as he could possibly get with the Joker, anyway). But it wasn’t long until he encountered yet another not so model citizen of Gotham City. The Joker had decided to crash into the heist of one Scarecrow as a type of Halloween prank. It went largely according to plan, save for Jester, who found himself lungs full of fear toxin.
Jester, for the most part, reacted just as anyone does when experiencing their worst fears. But as far as Professor Crane has ever seen, none of his victims have ever exhibited a sudden display of above average strength. A surge of adrenaline, yes, but not to the degree Jester was demonstrating. Intrigued, Crane had Jester taken to his lab.
The extreme stress of being under the effects of the fear toxin had activated Jess’ dormant metagene. Crane was little more than pleased; not only had he found a new (and seemingly durable) test subject, but also a chance to get an upper hand on the Joker. As the experimentation went on, Jester appeared to be building a tolerance to the terror the toxin produced but still retained the physical boosts. The two struck a deal.
Crane was to supply Jester with small dosages of concentrated fear toxin which he could inject himself with in exchange for Jester keeping an eye out on any plans the Joker had up his sleeve and reporting it to Crane.
Jess returned to the Joker hideout, new leverage in hand. But even with his window of opportunity now opened a little more ajar, Jester finds surviving the Gotham underground a little more than he bargained for. Escaping it is his goal, he just hopes it doesn’t involve a coffin.
ABOUT
Personality Type: ESTP-A [Assertive Entrepreneur]
Temperament: Phlegmatic
Alignment: True-to-Chaotic Neutral
Alert | Practical | Improvisational | Nervous | Pessimistic
Keeping a low profile is top priority for Jess. He does what he needs to do to keep his head floating above the zaniness he’s found himself in and to keep from falling into expendability, but otherwise Jess tries to keep clear of unnecessary attention. All in all, he just makes a good, faceless, henchman; he’s thorough, quick on his feet and has a solid work ethic.
He works hard to appear adjusted because in actuality-- this man is running on fumes. Jess has been on survival mode, desperately cobbling together plans for the chance of making it through the day. People in his social circle are quick to jab at him for being a bundle of nerves or even a stick-in-the-mud, Jess isn’t the kind to make risky decisions for the fun of it. He’d rather focus his energy in making allies where he can and staying alive where he can’t.
Self-preservation is of the utmost importance, but Jess is far from being self-centered. While he’ll swear it’s nothing personal, Jess looks out for the people around him. He always repays favors and will, without question, stick his neck out for the ones he’s gotten attached to. With those same people, he allows his sense of humor to peek out outside his usual sarcasm and shares his bleak, but persistent, glimmer of hope.

POWERS AND ABILITIES
Metahuman Biology: Jess’ metagene is tied to his adrenal system, but it seems to have given him other perks as well. Outside his metagene, Jess is at most an average marksman and brawler. He is however, a quick learner and a natural improviser, so he is best not underestimated.
Adrenaline Surges: Jess’ body creates a potent variation of adrenaline under stress which amp up his stats; his strength, speed, agility and reflexes heighten considerably.
Pain Tolerance: His already high resistance to pain heightens during these “surges,” he can continue physical movement and clear-mindedness despite heavy damage.
Minor Regeneration: The newest of his abilities, Jess has a rapid healing rate without much medical aid. Even more serious wounds such as gunshots and broken bones completely heal over in days.
Weapons and Inventory:
Ford Mustang: Jess is nearly inseparable from his Mustang and for good reason, he’s an ace get-away driver. Coupled with his practically GPS-level knowledge of Gotham City streets and quick reflexes, he’s almost impossible to catch.
Stun Grenades: Jess’ main ‘weapon’ of choice. He prefers to abandon a scene than to stick around and fight.
3’’ Balisongs: In case a fight becomes inevitable, Jess is a decent hand-to-hand combatant with the help of his twin blades.
Fear Toxin Dosages: Being unable to activate his metagene on his own, Jess relies on small, but concentrated injections of Scarecrow’s fear toxin to get it going when things go south.
Limitations and Weaknesses:
Burn Out: These surges have a cap time of around 30-40 minutes, 50 if he’s really pushing, once that time runs out he completely crashes. If not careful, he can potentially kill himself from over-exertion.
Fear Toxin Side Effects: Fear toxin is Jess’ surefire way to activate all his abilities and for a longer time, however not without its side effects. Hallucinations are always a given, ranging from loony-toon physics to outright body horror; without proper grounding, Jess will become too overridden with fear to properly function. After-effects include minor delusions, night terrors and lingering paranoia.

Notes:
Jess eventually climbs his way up the Joker Gang totem pole, landing him an unofficial ‘Third in Command’ role. He also puts himself in charge of money and inventory, normally no one seems to be aware of what’s going on stock wise, and he grew tired of it.
Likewise, he’s normally in charge of food and kitchen duty because no one lifts a finger to do that either.
He quickly grew attached to the hyenas, Bud and Lou, and the feeling seems to be mutual. They listen to him almost as much as they do to Harley.
When he’s not at the current Joker Hideout, Jess spends as much time as he can at Shrub’s Dive Bar. There he’s seen with his own little circle of bar buddies consisting of the Two Face Twins, Min and Max, Mr. Freeze’s Ice Maidens, Christine and Nevada, and the Penguin’s sniper, Sparhawk. They’ve become regular music performers to pass the time and have named their make-shift band as The Punch Clocks. They’ve become tight knit in their own way and will turn a blind eye when they cross each other on the field.
Jess will occasionally give information on Joker’s plans to Gotham’s heroes, notably to Nightwing. He’s a criminal, not a monster, and he’ll go as far as to help sabotage larger, deadlier plans.
