Pragmatic, quick-thinking, and armed with snark, Jess spends his time trying to keep afloat the chaos that surrounds him. He considers himself the “rational” one of the group. He acts mainly out of his own interest, be it extra pay or simply staying alive. While he tries not to get his hands too dirty to prevent a larger sentence, he does what he has to if it means achieving a goal.

His situation wasn't of his own will and he despises the seemingly mindless violence around him, although he is rarely vocal about his opposition, given it'll only land him in hot water. He's not above impassively sabotaging schemes he finds out of hand, or turning a blind eye to "mistakes" in a plan.

Powers/Advantages:

With potent adrenaline surges, Jess can amp up his body stats, his strength, speed, agility and reflexes heighten considerably. He has an already high pain tolerance in day-to-day life, but during these “surges” that tolerance increases; he can continue movement despite receiving heavy damage. The latest addition to his mix-bag of abilities is his rapid healing factor, without much assistance his body can patch up injuries as heavy as stab/bullet wound, bordering on regeneration when it comes to smaller body parts such as digits or ears.

Jess cannot activate this metagene by will, his surges activate only during times of extreme stress and even then, he’s never really sure what mixture of abilities he’s stuck with at the time [i.e perhaps his body stats are activated, but his healing rate will be normal or his pain tolerance is no different]. These surges have a cap time of around 30-40 minutes, 50 if he’s really pushing, once that time runs out he completely crashes. If not careful, he can potentially kill himself from over-exertion.

Fear toxin is Jess’ surefire way to activate all his abilities and for a longer time, however not without its side effects. Hallucinations are always a given, ranging from loony-toon physics to outright body horror; without proper grounding, Jess will become too overridden with fear to properly function. After-effects include minor delusions, night terrors and lingering paranoia.

Outside his metagene, Jess is at most an average marksman and brawler. He is however, a quick learner and a natural improviser, so he is best not underestimated.

Biography:

TW: Minor drug use and overdose mention

Jess was born to a pair of too young, too broken drug junkies straddling the poverty line in the slums of Gotham. His childhood was riddled with yelling matches, insincere apologies and overdosages, one that finally claimed his father’s life when Jess was eight. His already haphazard  home life lost what little stability it had, school offered a ever-so-slightly better shelter although Jess himself was a terrible student. It was a nice place to avoid the strangers that had started frequenting his house and the food was at the very least edible.

When he was ten, while wandering around avoiding going home too early, Jess was called over by a man who owned a mechanics and junkyard shop. The man, Seb Boswell, offered to pay Jess if he helped him load in new inventory. Jess, seeing an opportunity to stay out a little longer and get paid for it, agreed. From then on, Jess would circle around the shop, aptly named Seb’s, offering a hand regardless if he was paid or not. Seb took a shine to Jess, having found him a sharp kid.

Perhaps a little too sharp, as it wasn’t long before Jess found out Seb’s doubled as a chop shop. Most, if not all the merchandise within Seb’s were of stolen cars, not only that, but it also served as a meet up spot for Seb’s more lucrative dealings, such as bank heists. Seb was surprised, however, to find out Jess kept his mouth shut about the matter and had at one point completely discarded of evidence that pointed a finger directly at Seb regarding several stolen car parts. Impressed, Seb took Jess under his wing, showing him the ways of the sleight-of-hand.

The years came and went. Jess eventually dropped out of high school freshman year, his mother had run off with another man a little prior, both things were like water off a duck’s back. His prime interest was Seb’s and the activities that transpired within it. He helped work as a clerk to Seb during the day, a right hand man when it came to shady merchandise dealings, but most of all, Seb’s best auto thief. Jess grew into his early twenties a successful con man.

Things wouldn’t be flipped onto its head until, after an already well-paid car theft well done, Jess decided one more bonus couldn’t hurt and he sent his sights on a vehicle left for the taking. What ensued was a car chase throughout Gotham by the city’s very own Batman. Unbeknownst to Jess, the car he had stolen belonged to the Joker and had been pinned down by a tracker. Batman, thinking the Joker had made his move, simply followed. Jess was finally cornered and taken to jail, but he would never get the chance of a trial.

The Joker hadn’t taken the idea of a simple hustler stealing something from him too kindly and had sent his Stooges to break him out of his cell. Fully intending to kill Jess and use him as an example for any other poor soul, Jess was taken to Ace Chemicals where he was to be thrown in one of the vats. He managed to squirm his way out of his captors’ grip (but not before narrowly falling into a vat anyway, his fingers would became “perma-clowned” due to this), regardless, he didn’t make it out of the plant. He did, however, with frantic pleading and promises to work for the Joker, managed to amuse the Joker enough for him to completely scrap his plan of killing him.

He did watch the entire chase on live television after all, and he couldn’t help but notice Jess’ skill behind the wheel. So for the time being, as long as Jess kept himself useful (or at the very least entertaining), he was to be the Joker gang’s brand spankin’ new errand boy. The window of opportunity was narrow, Jess realized, but it was an open one nonetheless. Not one to throw away chances, he jumped headfirst into the gig, adopting the mantle of the clown henchmen, Jester.

Well aware of the doomsday clock ticking over his head, Jester did whatever he could to keep himself in good graces (as good of graces as he could possibly get with the Joker, anyway). But it wasn’t long until he encountered yet another not so model citizen of Gotham City. The Joker had decided to crash into the heist of one Scarecrow as a type of Halloween prank. It went largely according to plan, save for Jester, who found himself lungs full of fear toxin.

Jester, for the most part, reacted just as anyone does when experiencing their worst fears. But as far as Professor Crane has ever seen, none of his victims have ever exhibited a sudden display of above average strength. A surge of adrenaline, yes, but not to the degree Jester was demonstrating. Intrigued, Crane had Jester taken to his lab.

The extreme stress of being under the affects of the fear toxin had activated Jess’ dormant metagene. Crane was little more than pleased; not only had he found a new (and seemingly durable) test subject, but also a chance to get an upper hand on the Joker. As the experimentation went on, Jester appeared to be building a tolerance to the terror the toxin produced but still retained the physical boosts. The two struck a deal.

Crane was to supply Jester with small dosages of concentrated fear toxin which he could inject himself with in exchange for Jester keeping an eye out on any plans the Joker had up his sleeve and reporting it to Crane.

Jess returned to the Joker hideout, new leverage in hand. But even with his window of opportunity now opened a little more ajar, Jester finds surviving the Gotham underground a little more than he bargained for. Escaping it is his goal, he just hopes it doesn’t involve a casket.

Notes:

  • Jester eventually rises to the post that can be considered third in command, but his strength lies as the Joker Gang's getaway driver. Think Baby Driver stunt level, coupled with exact knowledge of streets, highways, and shortcuts, he’s near impossible to catch if not prepared.

  • He had a strangely amicable relationship with the original Robin, rather give himself up than to fight one on one with him. Jess isn’t above giving him hints to any wrongdoings the Joker might be up to, or even going as far as to tag-team. As of yet, no other hero is privy to this treatment.

  • Jess hasn't cut contact with Seb since becoming Jester, in fact Seb remains Jess' closest confidante. Jess makes sure the shop remains a blind spot in the Joker's eye over Gotham, as he knows it's become the biggest chink in his armor.

  • Despite never being the best at academics, Jess holds a solid grasp on mathematics. He's able to calculate large numbers mentally.
