About "neat":
I am far from neat in my sketch.
Here's the trick!
(1) Sketch on tracing paper
(2) Ink the "final" lines
(3) Trace onto art paper using light behind the tracing paper.
For #3, I have a glass dining table, so I place a lamp beneath that.
But I've read deviants saying they use something called a "light box".
Guess that must be the same idea, but designed for that purpose.
(better than aching thigh muscles from clipping the lamp against the glass of the dining table!)
Re #2: why tracing paper?
Because my art paper is rather thick (better for watercolours), if I sketch on opaque paper, even when lighted from behind, it's not easy to see the inked lines.

haha.great trick! I wonder why i never did this before when in fact i've been using tracing paper for 5 years being an architecture student! wait, speaking of tracing, have you tried shading the back of your paper black then tracing them on art paper? that's what I usually do with my course-related perspective drawings, you need not use opaque paper for sketches,although it could be a little messy.

eeek! To think I learnt the light-behind-paper trick from watching my sis, who was an architecture student! I love perspective drawings! Very tedious, though.

being an architecture student actually made me stop drawing for awhile.it was exhausting and I thought I'm already making too many drawings I cannot afford to draw for leisure.

Has my sis graduated?
Yes and no.
The architecture course is in two parts: General Degree (3 years) and then another 2 years to be able to practice as an architect.
After 3 years my sis decided it wasn't her cup of tea. So she stopped there, just a General Degree.

oh, it works that way there... we have to finish 5 years education and then work under an architect as apprentice for another 2 years. it takes us that long to be architects.

haha ... and guess how I came to even know about Mario brothers?
A couple of weeks ago, I commented on a fanart of the Mario Brothers, done in semi-realistic style, with hairy chests and muscular arms, and well-filled swimming trunks. Mario was in a red trunk with a white "M", and Luigi in green with a white "L".
Having no idea who they were, my comment went something like this:
"When I first saw this, I thought ...
hmmm ... can't see all that much difference ...
Then I saw the names in the Deviation Description ...
wait a minute!
The "M" and "L" are for the names!
Whatever was I thinking?"
After that, I was curious enough to google the Mario Brothers.
And as I was at that time thinking of Ensei running away from his bath ...
that was how it all came about.

Oh, I think I actually saw that realistic Mario piece some time ago. Haha, it's OK. Sometimes my dumbness syndrome takes over, too. (Like I didn't figure out that Alucard's name was an anagram, until the info was openly presented in one of the last episodes. xD )
I'm still impressed by the creativity, though. How do these random ideas ever combine in our minds?
