Description
A few weeks ago, my company went to Bali for our 'annual meeting'. Bali was great, and I fully intend to return, but this time NOT in a Chinese tour group. Haha. My best day was at Blangsinga Waterfall, a tiny day resort in a canyon. I saw a most beautiful boy and snuck a few photos (Twitter ). Between the trip and a brief span in between returning and wrapping up some hellish projects before Spring Festival, I evolved the idea quite a bit from a literal recreation into something a bit more creative. I also decided to make it a little more special as a subtle animation. Some of the surroundings and the actual waterfall are my own mediocre photography from Bali.I've got a few other things to catch up on, but I'll be doing a modern version with a nude at some point in the not too distant future.

Thank you! He was!
I'm always around. I just didn't have much production time until Spring Festival vaca started.

How were you able to create the animation? Create two images with a slightly different water refraction settings?

Yup, but 3. I also did a little PS filtering to give a more ripply effect.

Water is tricky. Texture and materials. I try to avoid it, but the concept of this piece required it. To do this without Photoshop would have taken a LOT more experimenting and render hours. Water takes forever to render. I'm not a philosophical purist, so I don't feel bad doing something in PS for 20 minutes instead of another 8 hours of render experiments, then 1 or 2 more full renders to capture the water frames. My first thought during concepting was to actually animate the state changes of a water plane, but that would have been an insane amount of render time for such a subtle effect.

That integration of your photo and the water animation is terrific and very cool! Such a sweet connection between the guy and the elephant.

Thanks! I took a while on it all.
The elephant's eyes are a little odd, but I didn't know what else to for it having a facial expression. Haha. I think it looks happy enough.

What a handsome guy! I love all the little details. The piercings, the sheen on his skin, the gentle movement of the water. Beautiful!
