Chapter 1 1/2:

I never meant to fall in love with her. I guess I let my mind slip, left my heart too open. When Ritza died, I guess I became just a shell of a man, wide open like the gaping maw of a baby bird without a mother.

I'll always love Ritza, forever and ever, just like I promised... but she's gone now, and I feel some sort of obligation towards this other girl, like I need to love her. She looks as if she's never seen love a day in her life.

I felt so stupid for not asking for her name. After all, isn't that what you're supposed to do? I imagined her name being something old fashioned, like her apparrel. Dark from head to toe, and a personality much the same, I imagine. Her hair the colour of happiness... golden, almost white. Her eyes, a deep green. Not dark, but deep... like there's something buried underneath it all that I have to dig out.

Where will she come in to play, I wonder. When will I meet her again? I breathed out a sigh as I left the shop. No, I wasn't in love with her, not yet anyway. But I was well on my way there. When she wasn't looking, I whipped around to take one last look at her. She was handing out cash to another customer, her pale, translucent-looking skin brushing against the counter. She moved fast, without thought, as though the world was no match for her.

Danny slipped back through the door and tugged on my sleeve, beconning me away. "Santa!" he cried.

With one last glance, I swept through the doorway to watch the remainder of the Festival.
